The officers who took them into custody reported investigating \u201ca hazardous drone operation\u201d near the airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">A third suspect, who is believed to have fled the island on a small boat, is being sought, according to police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Boston police said a drone was found inside Duffy\u2019s backpack, and the two detained men were scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">According to police, a Boston police officer using surveillance technology about six hours before the arrests detected an \u201cunmanned aircraft system\u201d operating near the airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">They identified the drone\u2019s location, altitude, flight history and the operators\u2019 position on Long Island in Boston harbor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">\u201cEven small drones pose significant risks, including the potential for catastrophic damage to airplanes and helicopters,\u201d police said in a statement. \u201cNear-collisions can cause pilots to veer off course, putting lives and property at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Pointing at how serious of a response authorities are now considering for the apparent mass drone sightings, Boston police co-ordinated their efforts with the Department of Homeland Security, Massachusetts state police, the joint terrorism task force, the federal communications commission and Logan airport\u2019s air traffic control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Chuck Schumer, the US Senate majority leader, on Sunday added his name to a list of officials who were requesting federal-level drone detection technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Meanwhile, Mike Waltz \u2013 the Florida congressman who has been chosen as the national security adviser for the second Donald Trump presidency \u2013 said the drone sightings, particularly the unexplained ones, exposed gaps between federal agencies and local law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">\u201cAmericans are finding it hard to believe we can\u2019t figure out where these are coming from,\u201d he told CBS\u2019s Face the Nation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/dec\/16\/two-men-arrested-drone-boston-airport\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two men suspected of flying a drone \u201cdangerously close\u201d to Boston\u2019s Logan international airport were arrested on Saturday night and charged with trespassing, according to authorities.
