You can listen to episodes <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.chtbl.com\/t03J8-rB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n777ij004h2cqfbogu8v25@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>(CNN) \u2014 <\/strong>The holidays and New Year\u2019s Eve are fast approaching, and for many, that means alcohol-infused festivities and gatherings to navigate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000f3b6ka3pdpdvo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            We\u2019re quickly learning that alcohol\u2019s effects on the human body are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/14\/health\/alcohol-drinking-health-wellness\/index.html\">not good<\/a>, to say the least. There were 2.6 million deaths worldwide attributable to alcohol consumption in 2019, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/alcohol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a>. That count includes deaths from conditions caused by alcohol \u2014 such as heart disease, liver disease and many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(22)00317-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different types of cancer<\/a> \u2014 as well as deaths from the consequences of alcohol-fueled events like falls, drownings, traffic accidents and suicide.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000g3b6kf6ox9avy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And that statistic was from before Covid-19, when the stress and isolation of the pandemic resulted in alcohol use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/23\/health\/covid-alcohol-increase-drinking\/index.html\">going up \u2014 and staying up<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000h3b6k3bl93yrw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perhaps it\u2019s no wonder that many people have become \u201csober curious,\u201d expanding the popularity of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/27\/us\/sober-bars-mocktails-alcohol-free-wellness-cec\/index.html\">sober bars<\/a>, crafted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/04\/01\/health\/non-alcoholic-sober-bars-dry-january-wellness-cec\/index.html\">mocktails<\/a> and months dedicated to the pursuit, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/01\/health\/nonalcoholic-drinks-after-dry-january-wellness\/index.html\">Dry January<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/16\/health\/sober-october-alcohol-wellness\/index.html\">Sober October<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000i3b6kycpw48sf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Whether you choose to drink or not is an individual decision. Personal history, family history, tolerance for the physical short-term consequences (losing control, being drunk, blacking out or being hungover), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/about-alcohol-use\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long-term health concerns<\/a>, and even whether you like the taste of alcohol, all factor into it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000j3b6kmgr1wrrx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One reason some people may turn to alcohol is because it\u2019s perceived as a social lubricant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000k3b6kjkox0t85@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey tell us, \u2018I\u2019m more funny,\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m less shy,\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m more confident,\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m more outgoing,\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m more flirty,\u2019\u201d Dr. Jason Kilmer, an associate professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington, told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta on his podcast Chasing Life recently.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000l3b6kweebqsbr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Kilmer, who has studied and worked on preventing alcohol and drug use disorders among college students for two decades, said that an innovative experiment, conducted at the University of Washington\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/labs.wsu.edu\/behavioral-neuroscience-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Behavioral Alcohol Research, or BAR, Laboratory<\/a>, showed that it\u2019s actually not true that drinking boosts your interactions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000m3b6kstczqbn2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAlcohol does a lot of things: the reaction time impact, the motor coordination impact, the impact on judgment \u2014 these are all legitimate pharmacological effects of alcohol,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000n3b6kb87c7u41@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut the social or interpersonal things we get from drinking are so much more due to our mindset, our expectations, our beliefs, where we are and who we\u2019re with, and so much less to do with the contents of the cup in our hand.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000o3b6kchr6k6yk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You can listen to the full episode <a href=\"https:\/\/link.chtbl.com\/t03J8-rB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/audio\/podcasts\/chasing-life\/episodes\/ac9f6218-37bb-11ef-8219-4bd3346e8d59.articleplayer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"385\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000q3b6k0sg54dlt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For the study experiment, students recruited to the BAR lab who were 21 and older (and had signed a consent form) were divided into four groups. Members of one group were  told they were getting drinks with alcohol, and they did; participants in a second group were told they were getting alcohol-free drinks, and they did.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000r3b6kr6zfi57k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So far so good. The twist came with the remaining groups: Students in the third group were told they were getting drinks with alcohol but were served alcohol-free drinks instead, and those in the last group were told they were getting alcohol-free drinks but were served drinks with alcohol.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000s3b6kxpvvm0gd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Study participants who were given alcoholic drinks received a specific amount of alcohol, based on sex and weight, that would get them to a 0.06% blood alcohol level, Kilmer said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000t3b6kegi07vqj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat\u2019s a big dose in one drink; that\u2019s three-quarters of the way to the legal limit,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s enough to keep someone at a positive blood alcohol level almost four hours once they hit that peak.\u201d <em\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000u3b6k8h1pqlic@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers observed them interacting in the BAR lab for an hour. The results were surprising.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000v3b6k8p5osfd9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The reaction of participants in the two groups in which beliefs matched what was served were as expected. In the first group, \u201cit looks like a bunch of college students drinking: the volume of the group increases, people interact a lot more,\u201d Kilmer said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000w3b6kt9pxog7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The second group, with no alcohol, was more subdued. \u201cIt\u2019s a much quieter group, much less interaction. At best, it looks like a bunch of students who don\u2019t know each other who are asked to hang out and drink water together for an hour,\u201d he explained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000x3b6ky9m7gq0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The \u201cgroundbreaking findings,\u201d Kilmer said, was with the next two groups.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000y3b6k530wdo65@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For those who thought they were getting alcohol but didn\u2019t, the group dynamic appeared quite active, according to Kilmer. <em>\u201c<\/em>The volume of the group has increased, people are interacting a lot more, people are shoving tables together and playing drinking games with water,\u201d he said. \u201cSome people report feeling physical effects.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y000z3b6krgt3cm8x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fourth group, which had people who thought they were getting alcohol-free drinks, lacked those social interactions.<em>\u201c<\/em>They got the alcohol (but) none of that great social stuff happened,\u201d he said. \u201cTwenty-minute mark: Everyone\u2019s sitting around going, \u2018When\u2019s this dumb study gonna get done?\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y00103b6kcn8qzsi8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kilmer said that by the 40-minute mark, when the physical effects of alcohol kick in \u2014 alcohol depresses, or slows down, the central nervous system \u2014 participants  in the fourth group   attributed what they were feeling not to drunkenness but to other things, such as getting a poor night\u2019s sleep, being in an overly warm room or being clumsy. <em\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y00113b6knem66jj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As for all the social benefits, \u201cit\u2019s not coming from the alcohol to start with,\u201d Kilmer said. \u201cIt\u2019s probably really fun to be out with the people you\u2019re out with, away from work or school or stress.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y00123b6k2olkydcv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some people may still be reluctant to release their grip on that jumbo-size  party cup, beer bottle or glass of wine. For them, Kilmer has these five tips to reduce alcohol\u2019s harms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y00133b6kn17fqnck@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Drink less \u2014 or not at all.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y00143b6kw44m9j9o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCertainly, if someone is trying to avoid any unwanted effects, choosing an alcohol-free option might be the path they select,\u201d Kilmer said via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y00163b6ksvbtg50b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you do make the choice to drink, he suggested lessening alcohol\u2019s impact by alternating each alcoholic drink with a glass of water. \u201cThis will help with pacing as well as rehydrating,\u201d he noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y00173b6k2ifwnx3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rehydrating will also lower your chances of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/01\/health\/hangover-myths-and-facts-wellness\/index.html\">hangover<\/a> the next day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y00183b6kjhbadctu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The prevailing wisdom to eat before or while drinking is on the money.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y00193b6khxbuvfku@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen we drink on an empty stomach, alcohol is absorbed more quickly into the bloodstream (and can result in a higher blood alcohol concentration),\u201d Kilmer said. \u201cFood will slow down the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y001a3b6kfh1s9oc1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So go ahead and order those nachos \u2014 in this instance, they really are good for you!\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y001b3b6k23djljil@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Keep track of the number of \u201cstandard\u201d drinks you consume, not just the number of empty glasses on the table, Kilmer advised.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y001c3b6kvvnlaub2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA mixed drink with two measured shots of hard alcohol might come in one glass but is treated by the body as two standard drinks,\u201d he said. \u201cSame with a large glass of wine \u2014 that will likely be more than one (standard) drink.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y001d3b6k357pw94m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohols-effects-health\/overview-alcohol-consumption\/what-standard-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one \u201cstandard\u201d drink<\/a> contains roughly 14 grams of pure alcohol. That equals about 12 ounces of regular beer (at 5% alcohol; some light beers have less) or 5 ounces of wine (at 12% alcohol) or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits (at 40% alcohol or 80 proof).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y001e3b6k0wli4x8x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Be aware of the role of effervescence, Kilmer said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y001f3b6kbn20vad6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe more bubbly a drink is, the more quickly it gets absorbed,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is why people say they feel champagne so quickly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4n7hg4y001g3b6kr6u9ui1m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The same holds true for carbonated mixers, he noted.
