They\u2019re also said to plan on taking money allocated for building charging stations and making EVs more affordable and redirecting them to sourcing batteries and their required minerals from places other than China. In addition, they reportedly want to <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/trumps-transition-team-aims-kill-biden-ev-tax-credit-2024-11-14\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:axe;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">axe<\/a> the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ev-buyers-will-get-an-instant-rebate-for-every-car-purchased-starting-in-2024-211224909.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Biden administration\u2019s $7,500 tax credit;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Biden administration\u2019s $7,500 tax credit<\/a> for consumer EV purchases.<\/p>\n<p>The plans would let automakers produce more gas-powered vehicles by reversing emissions and fuel economy standards, pushing them back to 2019 levels. <em>Reuters<\/em> says that would lead to around 25 percent more emissions per vehicle mile than the current limits. That <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climate-indicators\/greenhouse-gases\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:leads;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">leads<\/a> to a cascade of effects in the atmosphere, on land and in oceans \u2014 some of which we\u2019re <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/climate-change\/extreme-weather\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:already seeing;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">already seeing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As for tariffs, economists have <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:9;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/28\/us\/politics\/trumps-tariffs-global-trade.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:9;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">said<\/a> Trump\u2019s plans would likely spur multiple trade wars as countries retaliate with tariffs on American goods, disrupt supply chains and pierce the heart of America\u2019s post-World War II alliances. \u201cIf we go down the tariff war path, we\u2019re going down a very dark path for the economy,\u201d Mark Zandi, the chief economist of Moody\u2019s Analytics, told <em>The New York Times<\/em> in October.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has championed climate legislation like the Inflation Reduction Act, which <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/president-joe-biden-signs-inflation-reduction-act-200724230.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:allocated $369 billion for green initiatives;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">allocated $369 billion for green initiatives<\/a>, and EPA rules that require automakers to ramp up EV sales.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump has <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:11;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-51213003\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:called;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:11;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">called<\/a> climate change a \u201choax.\u201d In May, he reportedly <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:12;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/05\/09\/trump-oil-industry-campaign-money\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:12;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">told<\/a> a group of oil executives that he would immediately reverse dozens of Biden\u2019s environmental rules while blocking new ones from being enacted. His asking price for such deregulation was that they raise $1 billion for his campaign. (Thanks, Citizens United!)
