Trump\u2019s argument that a recent Supreme Court ruling had nullified his criminal case in New York, upholding the former and future president\u2019s felony conviction for falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The judge\u2019s ruling preserves, at least for now, the stain of Mr. Trump\u2019s criminal conviction. And if it withstands an appeal, it will make Mr. Trump the first felon to serve as president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The ruling, which addressed <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/01\/us\/politics\/supreme-court-trump-immunity.html\" title=\"\">the Supreme Court\u2019s decision<\/a> to grant presidents broad immunity for their official actions, thwarted only the first of several legal maneuvers Mr. Trump has concocted to clear his record of 34 felonies before returning to the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prosecutors had argued that the Supreme Court\u2019s decision had \u201cno bearing on this prosecution,\u201d noting that Mr. Trump was convicted of orchestrating a scheme involving a personal and political crisis that predated his presidency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Mr. Trump\u2019s lawyers seized on a particularly contentious portion of the high court\u2019s ruling, which prohibited prosecutors from introducing evidence involving a president\u2019s official acts even in a case about private misconduct.
