(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/about\/news-publications\/news\/2024\/march\/worms-chornobyl-pnas.html\">Matthew Rockman<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s going to be thousands of years before &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chernobyl-tour.com\/chernobyl_or_chornobyl_en.html\">Chornobyl<\/a>&#8216;, as it is spelt in Ukraine, is safe for human habitation again. Most of us know that and steer clear accordingly. But animals \u2026 well, they don&#8217;t understand to stay away. They go where they want, and the exclusion zone has since become a strange sort of radioactive, 2,600-square kilometer (1,000 square mile) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/chernobyl-s-transformed-from-nightmare-to-sanctuary-since-the-accident-33-years-ago\">animal sanctuary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Tests of animals that live in the region have shown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dogs-living-in-the-chernobyl-exclusion-zone-are-genetically-distinct-study-shows\">clear genetic differences<\/a> from animals that don&#8217;t. But there&#8217;s still a lot we don&#8217;t know about the effects of the disaster on the local ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Chornobyl was a tragedy of incomprehensible scale, but we still don&#8217;t have a great grasp on the effects of the disaster on local populations,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/about\/news-publications\/news\/2024\/march\/worms-chornobyl-pnas.html\">Tintori said at the time<\/a>. &#8220;Did the sudden environmental shift select for species, or even individuals within a species, that are naturally more resistant to ionizing radiation?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>One way to gain insights into this question is to look at nematodes \u2013 microscopic roundworms that live in a range of habitats (including the bodies of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/surgeons-pull-a-live-roundworm-from-a-womans-brain-in-horrific-first\">other organisms<\/a>). Nematodes can be remarkably hardy; there have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/ancient-plants-and-animals-reawaken-after-40-000-years-of-the-deepest-icy-slumbers\">multiple cases<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/40-000-year-old-nematodes-revived-siberian-permafrost\">nematodes reawakening<\/a> after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/ancient-worm-resurrected-after-46000-years-of-death-defying-limbo\">thousands of years<\/a> frozen in permafrost.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>They have simple genomes, and live <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7570440\/\">short lives<\/a>, which means multiple generations can be studied in a short space of time. This makes them excellent model organisms for studying a range of things, from biological development, to DNA repair and toxin response.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>This is why Tintori and her colleagues went digging in Chornobyl to find nematodes of the species <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oscheius_tipulae\"><em>Oschieus tipulae<\/em><\/a>, which typically lives in soil.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Postcards from Pripyat, Chernobyl, Ukraine (Drone Footage)\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oNV5Sq28Mp4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen=&#8221;allowfullscreen&#8221;&gt;<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>They collected hundreds of nematodes from rotten fruit, leaf litter, and the soil in the CEZ, using <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geiger_counter\">Geiger counters<\/a> to measure ambient radiation and wearing protective suits against radioactive dust.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The researchers cultured nearly 300 of their CEZ worms in a laboratory, and selected 15 specimens of <em>O. tipulae<\/em> for genome sequencing.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>These sequenced genomes were then compared to the sequenced genomes of five specimens of <em>O. tipulae<\/em> from elsewhere in the world \u2013 the Philippines, Germany, the United States, Mauritius, and Australia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146996\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146996\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/12\/1709591389309-642x548.jpg\" alt=\"Map of Chernobyl exclusion zone, marked with colored dots\" width=\"642\" height=\"548\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-146996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/12\/1709591389309-642x548.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/12\/1709591389309-486x415.jpg 486w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/12\/1709591389309-768x655.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/12\/1709591389309-600x512.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/12\/1709591389309.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A map of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, with dots to mark the worm collection sites and the different levels of radiation at each site. But signs of DNA damage from the radiation environment were lacking.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The team carefully analyzed the worms&#8217; genome, and found no evidence of the large-scale chromosomal rearrangements expected from a mutagenic environment. They also found no correlation between the mutation rate of the worms, and the strength of the ambient radiation at the location each worm hailed from.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Finally, they conducted tests on the descendents on each of the 20 worm strains to determine how well the population tolerates DNA damage.
