{"id":138072,"date":"2024-12-17T15:12:04","date_gmt":"2024-12-17T08:12:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=138072"},"modified":"2024-12-17T15:12:04","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T08:12:04","slug":"bird-flu-detected-in-west-michigan-commercial-poultry-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=138072","title":{"rendered":"Bird flu detected in West Michigan commercial poultry facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LXODC5UXCVH5ZAELHIBWFWVJDM\">OTTAWA COUNTY, MI \u2013 A Michigan poultry farm has been hit by the highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as bird flu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SANDLLXT4BGVPFQLJSGO5JPZEE\">Veterinary researchers detected the disease in a commercial poultry facility in Ottawa County during an investigation conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), according to a Dec. 16 news release from the state agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E6J46Q6HOFCCRK27AEAK5EMOAE\">The state did not disclose the name of the Ottawa County farm or the number of birds affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PGRRQV4TUFBJBFQU7WJGWNUOP4\">This is the first time the disease has been detected in a Michigan poultry flock since May 2024 when the state managed the largest outbreak of the disease, and the second case of the virus in a commercial poultry facility from Ottawa County since the disease was first detected in Michigan in 2022, the release stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DB7TJGRZHVHXBEM7IOGQAMWBVI\">MDARD officials say slowing the spread of the disease is vital in helping ensure the health of Michigan\u2019s domestic animals as well as the health of the general public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DABKEV7Z2JDKFPCBK5SQLOSF6A\">\u201cSince this disease is capable of affecting animals and the people who care for them, it is important for farm workers to continue using personal protective equipment to protect themselves and their loved ones,\u201d said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, chief medical executive, in a statement. \u201cPreventing spread from animals to humans is vital if we want to limit the impact of this virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6DMHOIEFHNCG3H3OQ3KTQQBVEI\">The affected Ottawa County facility is currently under quarantine, and the birds will be depopulated, or killed, to prevent disease spread, the release said. These efforts also help to ensure the safety and integrity of the commercial food supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7QQTXB6TIRDYVIU4QLF76YD3CQ\">\u201cSlowing the spread of HPAI to protect human health is a top priority at MDARD,\u201d MDARD Director Tim Boring stated. \u201cImplementing on-farm biosecurity and expanding our HPAI surveillance efforts are key strategies to prevent opportunities for the virus to infect domestic animal species and potentially spread and become a more concerning human threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6G5XCASZCVHKVDFH4FGT64D4TY\">The avian influenza is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily from flock to flock, including by wild birds, contact with infected poultry, equipment or on the clothes and shoes of farmers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3APMQXV3ZJHKBK3CG2PBJCHMNM\">Farms with one infected bird are required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to depopulate their entire flock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V5254CTMOBCRJG5T4GPGYBILRE\">\u201cAs the weather remains cold and HPAI continues to circulate in wild bird populations, conditions are ideal for the virus to thrive and spread,\u201d said State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland. \u201cIt is critical to prevent the introduction of disease by taking measures such as keeping domestic animals away from wild birds and cleaning and disinfecting equipment between uses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AAPCGGD675BETCFRI224BVI7NY\">Health officials say the risk of humans getting sick from the avian flu remains low, and no infected animals or products will enter the food supply chain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2LNGQHENRVHJ5P263AXNXB7QVI\">State officials offered the following tips to prevent the spread of bird flu and protect Michigan\u2019s domestic birds, whether it\u2019s among a few backyard birds or a large commercial flock:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"article__unordered-list\">\n<li><span>Prevent contact between domestic and wild birds by bringing them indoors or ensuring their outdoor area is fully enclosed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Wash your hands before and after handling birds as well as when moving between different coops.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Disinfect boots and other gear when moving between coops.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Do not share equipment or other supplies between coops or other farms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/links-2.govdelivery.com\/CL0\/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Fmdard%2F-%2Fmedia%2FProject%2FWebsites%2Fmdard%2Fdocuments%2Fanimals%2Fdiseases%2Favian%2FCleaning-for-HPAI.pdf%3Frev=5ca6341438614f3db5a7652f9595b5ca%26hash=77B6ABA5140E3C649071723BFB2B4C92\/1\/01010193d0f43b60-4eb07a31-e805-48bc-8de8-df902bb20f68-000000\/bzTZhwgUyn0YmhxtfRyEDSaGLkSGqCJJ_Vp6tR0jjfI=383\">Clean and disinfect<\/a> equipment and other supplies.
