(NASA\/Caltech-JPL\/SwRI)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galileo_Galilei\">Galileo<\/a> first spotted Io in 1610, its volcanism wasn&#8217;t discovered until 1979: that&#8217;s when imaging scientist Linda Morabito, from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California, saw a volcanic plume from an image taken by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voyager_1\">Voyager 1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since Morabito&#8217;s discovery, planetary scientists have wondered how the volcanoes were fed from the lava underneath the surface,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasas-juno-mission-uncovers-heart-of-jovian-moons-volcanic-rage\/\">says<\/a> space physicist Scott Bolton, from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Was there a shallow ocean of white-hot magma fueling the volcanoes, or was their source more localized? Through a phenomenon known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tidal_heating\">tidal flexing<\/a>, huge amounts of internal heat are produced.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>However, the deformations laid out in this new study aren&#8217;t extensive enough to support the idea of a global magma ocean \u2013 or at least one that&#8217;s near the surface, based on <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/2016JE005005\">previous research<\/a> into the gravitational readings this would produce.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This constant flexing creates immense energy, which literally melts portions of Io&#8217;s interior,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasas-juno-mission-uncovers-heart-of-jovian-moons-volcanic-rage\/\">says<\/a> Bolton.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If Io has a global magma ocean, we knew the signature of its tidal deformation would be much larger than a more rigid, mostly solid interior.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The eruptions and lava flows on Io can reach hundreds of kilometers or miles in size, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/stunning-new-pics-of-jupiters-hellish-moon-snapped-from-earths-surface\">its surface<\/a> \u2013 sometimes described as being like a pizza \u2013 is covered in colorful remnants of volcanic activity, including silicates and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sulfur_dioxide\">sulfur dioxide<\/a>.
