The research team described their anatomy as \u201chighly maneuverable bodies that make them effective at capturing, killing, and feasting.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Although small, researchers say the Dulcibella camanchaca is a natural predator. <span class=\"credit\">Taylor &amp; Francis Group<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Weston added that the white, sci-fi-looking, 4-centimeter-long crustacean is a new species and a never-before-seen genus. It opens the door to further discovery towards the ocean\u2019s bottom half, also called the hadel zone, particularly in the local trench.<\/p>\n<p>The zone was called \u201can endemic hotspot\u201d by Weston, who is eager to see what else lies in the lurch in the geographically isolated Atacama.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Details of the newly found sea creatures<\/span> are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/14772000.2024.2416430#d1e245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published in the journal Systematics and Biodiversity<\/a>.\u00a0They were part of a larger 2023 initiative to explore extremely low waters. <\/p>\n<p>It involved a mooring system called the Integrated Deep-Ocean Observing System, or IDOOS.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Dulcibella camanchaca is found in an extremely deep water trench outside of Chile in South America. <span class=\"credit\">divedog \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>IDOOS used baiting traps and other scientific equipment at a depth just shy of 8,000 feet.
