Conspiracy theories about a secret government program, Project Blue Beam, are proliferating even as similar ones about an alien invasion diminish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Project Blue Beam is a theory introduced by the Canadian journalist Serge Monast in the 1990s that holds global elites will destabilize society by staging and unleashing massive supernatural events \u2013 alien invasions, holographic displays of cultural and religious figures, mind-control and faked crises \u2013 and then capitalize on the hysteria to implement a new world order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The name is a likely derivation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/104590\/unidentified-flying-objects-and-air-force-project-blue-book\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Project Blue Book,<\/a> a US air force program that investigated unidentified flying objects (UFOs) from 1947 to 1969.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The FBI said in the statement that \u201cmisidentification often occurs when UAS are mistaken for more familiar objects such as manned aircraft, low-orbit satellites, or celestial bodies like planets and stars\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The agencies advised residents to use flight, satellite and star-tracking apps to help determine if they are looking at drones, or UAS, \u201cor something else\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">On Monday, the New Jersey governor, Phil Murphy, was asked what message he had for people staring in the sky at night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">\u201cFirst of all, I\u2019d say calm down,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cThere\u2019s no evidence of anything nefarious here. We never say never, but \u2026 take a breath.\u201d He also noted that drone sightings had been down in recent days. On Monday, President-elect Donald Trump said the government was \u201ckeeping people in suspense\u201d and \u201cknows what is happening\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">But the White House, FBI and US Department of Homeland Security has said people were mistaking ordinary aircraft for drones. Nonetheless, Murphy said he understood why people were alarmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">\u201cI can\u2019t walk out that door and have somebody not stop me and say, \u2018Tell me what\u2019s going on with the drones.\u2019 And I get that completely,\u201d the governor added. \u201cIt\u2019s unnerving and it\u2019s really when life is not a math problem with X plus Y equals Z where there\u2019s a hard and fast answer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">\u201cI hesitate to use mass hysteria because I think the anxiety is legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Murphy conceded the collective anxiety has affected him whenever he has taken his dog out at night. \u201cI\u2019m looking up, and I\u2019m trying to figure out: \u2018is it a star?\u2019\u201d Murphy said. \u201c\u2018Is it an aircraft? What is that?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The FBI said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/joint-dhs-fbi-statement-on-reports-of-drones-in-new-jersey\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">an earlier statement<\/a> that it had \u201cno evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus\u201d.
