Between takes, Gunn sat with a bunch of reporters and revealed his approach to the Man of Steel \u2013 one that focuses solely on Superman\u2019s story without getting bogged down in larger universe-building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZero,\u201d Gunn emphatically stated when asked how much of the movie is dedicated to setting up other characters or future DC projects. \u201cI mean, maybe two little things, two moments, but basically if something\u2019s there just to set up something else, f\u2013k it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Gunn, this philosophy extends beyond just this film. \u201cEverything needs to stand by itself. I don\u2019t want somebody to have to go see this movie and be relying on anything else,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cIf this sets up stuff in \u2018Peacemaker,\u2019 which it does, then that\u2019s great. But that is never, ever, ever, with me, going to be something that I\u2019m going to sacrifice even a moment or a beat in a story for, especially a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gunn added: \u201cWith TV, you\u2019ve got a little bit more leniency to be able to do that. Lois and Clark already know each other. Lex hates Superman\u2019s guts from the beginning, although they don\u2019t know each other personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gunn\u2019s vision for the film draws from various influences while maintaining its own identity. \u201cAll previous DC media influenced me,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cI think that obviously the original Donner movie influenced me, but there\u2019s also a lot of things that this isn\u2019t, like I\u2019m not just making a Donner type movie. It\u2019s very different from that.\u201d Gunn specifically cited \u201cAll-Star Superman\u201d as a major comic book influence, noting its Silver Age feel and science fiction approach.<\/p>\n<p>For the action sequences, particularly the aerial scenes, Gunn and his team are taking inspiration from \u201cTop Gun: Maverick.\u201d They\u2019re using drones to capture Superman\u2019s flight scenes. \u201cWe shoot a lot of our action with actual drones flying in and around Superman and the people that he\u2019s flying with, Engineer, whoever else, that he\u2019s fighting up in the air.\u201d Gunn said. \u201cWe got these really small, crazy drones now. We\u2019ve got some of the best flyers in the world here who are working with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tone of the film sets it apart from Gunn\u2019s previous superhero outings. \u201cIt\u2019s humorous, but it certainly is not as comic or as much a comedy as either \u2018Suicide Squad\u2019 or \u2018Guardians,\u2019\u201d Gunn said. \u201cThere\u2019s plenty of humor in it. Gunn, who was \u201con the no trunks team for a long time,\u201d changed his mind after a conversation with star Corenswet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid said something to me that really affected me,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cSuperman wants kids to not be afraid of him. He\u2019s an alien. He\u2019s this incredibly powerful, could be considered scary individual and he wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler, he dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s score, composed by John Murphy, will include nods to John Williams\u2019 classic Superman theme while creating something new. \u201cIt\u2019s not a soundtrack, so it\u2019s not about the songs,\u201d Gunn noted. \u201cIt\u2019s much, much more of a score film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gunn also opened about the initial casting process and how he found both of his leads. Both Corenswet and Brosnahan\u2019s audition tapes arrived on the first day. \u201cI saw both of those and I went, \u2018Oh my God, we\u2019re going to be okay,\u2019\u201d Gunn said. Their chemistry test proved decisive: \u201cWe had this 15-minute-long scene that they have to act together and talk and discuss and just communicate. They said, \u2018Clark\u2019s the real one.\u2019 They said, \u2018Superman\u2019s the real one and Clark\u2019s the secret identity.\u2019 But I don\u2019t believe either of those things,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cI don\u2019t think anybody knows Superman unless they know both of him. And when they know both of him, they know the real guy. And that means not too many people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film underwent some changes during production, including moving away from its original \u201cLegacy\u201d title following a \u201cpre-mortem\u201d meeting where department heads discuss potential issues before filming begins. \u201cI thought maybe the title was they had a looking back feeling about it.
