rel=\"noopener\">Abundant Life Christian School<\/a> in Madison, Wis., on Monday, killing two people and injuring six more before dying of what police believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s one of more than 320 shootings that have taken place on school grounds this year alone, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/k12ssdb.org\/all-shootings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">K-12 School Shooting Database<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While school shootings are widespread in the U.S., this one is unusual because of the identity of the suspected perpetrator: Authorities have identified her as a 15-year-old girl.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<div id=\"resnx-s1-5231532-100\" INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>Data shows that female shooters \u2014 at schools and in general \u2014 are relatively rare.<\/p>\n<p>An FBI review of active shooter incidents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/file-repository\/active-shooter-incidents-20-year-review-2000-2019-060121.pdf\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from 2000 to 2019<\/a> found that of the 345 total perpetrators, 332 were men and just 13 were women.<\/p>\n<p>Similar statistics bear out when it comes to mass shootings, which the FBI defines as any incident in which at least four people are murdered with a gun (so Monday&#8217;s does not meet that criteria).<\/p>\n<div id=\"resnx-s1-5231532-101\" class=\"bucketwrap internallink insettwocolumn inset2col \">\n<div class=\"bucket img\">\n href=\"https:\/\/nij.ojp.gov\/topics\/articles\/public-mass-shootings-database-amasses-details-half-century-us-mass-shootings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justice Department database<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theviolenceproject.org\/mass-shooter-database\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Violence Prevention Project<\/a> says out of the 200 shooters involved in mass shootings between 1999 and 2024, only four identified as female and one as transgender \u2014 referring to the attacker in the 2023 shooting at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/03\/28\/1166482479\/nashville-school-shooting-covenant-what-we-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian elementary school<\/a> in Nashville.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">What makes female shooters rare \u2014 and different <\/h3>\n<p>Violence Prevention Project co-founder Jillian Peterson, a forensic psychologist and professor of criminology and criminal justice at Hamline University, says many school shooters &#8220;see themselves&#8221; in the perpetrators behind other tragedies \u2014 who have historically been men. Only nine female students have committed a school shooting since 1999, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2024\/12\/16\/abundant-life-christian-school-shooting-madison-wisconsin\/#link-I2ESHRU4K5H5FNMTSGWVDCJONE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an analysis<\/a> by the <em>Washington Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many school shooters study Columbine, for example,&#8221; Peterson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/03\/27\/981803154\/why-nearly-all-mass-shooters-are-men\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told NPR<\/a> in 2021. &#8220;Other university shooters study the Virginia Tech shooting. He connected first with Spencer, and after talking for a while, got the sense the shots had come from her house. Wiegand asked why she did it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She said &#8216;Because I just don&#8217;t like Mondays. Do you like Mondays?
