CMEs usually take about three days to reach Earth after departing the Sun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The SWPC rates solar storms on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/these-are-the-5-categories-that-measure-geomagnetic-storms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>five-level scale<\/u><\/a>, with five being the most extreme and rarest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/space-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>space weather<\/u><\/a> conditions. (Video: NASA\/SDO)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Potentially stronger geomagnetic storms are likely as Earth heads into the new year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">NOAA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/nasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>NASA<\/u><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/sun-reaches-solar-maximum-solar-cycle-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>revealed the Sun reached solar maximum<\/u><\/a>, a period of peak sunspot activity in its 11-year cycle.
