{"id":138325,"date":"2024-12-18T07:28:46","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T00:28:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=138325"},"modified":"2024-12-18T07:28:46","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T00:28:46","slug":"pollution-exposure-linked-to-mental-health-hospital-admissions-says-study-air-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=138325","title":{"rendered":"Pollution exposure linked to mental health hospital admissions, says study | Air pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Exposure to air pollution is linked to an increased risk of hospital admission for mental illness, according to the most comprehensive study of its kind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The research, involving more than 200,000 people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/scotland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Scotland<\/a>, found an increase in exposure to nitrogen dioxide in particular was associated with a higher number of people being admitted to hospital for behaviour disorders and mental illnesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Previously published research on the health effects of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution has tended to emphasise deaths rather than hospital admissions, and physical, rather than mental, ill health, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/lookup\/doi\/10.1136\/\/bmjopen-2024-084032\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The study<\/a> found that air pollution was linked to increased risks of hospital admission for mental health, as well as physical illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Stricter environmental restrictions would benefit millions of people and curb the impact on secondary care, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Dr Mary Abed Al Ahad of the University of St Andrews, who led the study, said policies to tackle air pollution and a shift to renewable energy could help ease the burden on hospitals of people with both physical and mental illnesses in the long term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">\u201cPolicies and interventions targeting air pollution emissions such as zero-emission zones or incentives for renewable energy in transportation and energy production sectors could help ease the hospital-care burden in the long term both locally and globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The analysis of data tracked from Public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Health<\/a> Scotland examined four key pollutants between 2002 and 2017 and the impact of ambient air pollution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Researchers drew on individual level data from the Scottish Longitudinal Study, which represents 5% of the Scottish population and includes demographic information from linked censuses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">In all, 202,237 people aged 17 and above were included in the research, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/lookup\/doi\/10.1136\/\/bmjopen-2024-084032\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">published in the open access journal BMJ Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Their health and hospital admissions for cardiovascular, respiratory, infectious diseases, mental illnesses or behaviour disorders were tracked from Public Health Scotland data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">They were linked to levels of four pollutants from road traffic and industry: nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">2<\/sub>); Higher cumulative exposure to NO<sub class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">2<\/sub>, PM10, and PM2.5 was associated with a higher incidence of hospital admissions for all causes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Ioannis Bakolis, a professor of public mental health and statistics at King\u2019s College London who was not involved with the study, said the \u201clarge-scale\u201d data was \u201cappropriately analysed\u201d and provided further evidence on the link between air pollution and mental health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2019\/aug\/20\/growing-up-in-air-polluted-areas-linked-to-mental-health-issues\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Research has previously shown<\/a> how people who spend their childhood in areas with high levels of air pollution may be more likely to later develop mental disorders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">But a study by researchers in the US and Denmark has suggested a link between air pollution and an increased risk of mental health problems, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and personality disorders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Between 1% and 2% of the UK population have bipolar disorder in their lifetime, with similar figures for schizophrenia.
