But now it\u2019s well established that the symptoms can persist into adulthood \u2014 and a large new study has assessed which treatments may be most effective at alleviating them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vws000m3b6mr9yym2s5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stimulant medications, and atomoxetine (a type of antidepressant), were more effective than <a href=\"https:\/\/online.stat.psu.edu\/stat200\/lesson\/1\/1.4\/1.4.4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placebos<\/a> at reducing core ADHD symptoms during a 12-week period, found the study published Tuesday in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpsy\/article\/PIIS2215-0366(24)00360-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lancet Psychiatry<\/a>. Core symptoms of the neurodevelopmental disorder are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, said study author Dr. Samuele Cortese, professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Southampton in England, in a Tuesday press briefing hosted by the Science Media Centre.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000n3b6mrt7oz8zs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prior to conducting this study, Cortese and several other study authors had various types of affiliations \u2014 such as for consulting or research \u2014 with pharmaceutical companies, some of which manufacture ADHD medications. But the affiliations had no bearing on any aspect of the research, according to the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000o3b6mb13evmkf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cortese said about 5% to 7% of children and 2.5% of adults worldwide have ADHD, which stems from underdeveloped or impaired executive function and self-regulation skills, according to Harvard University\u2019s Center on the Developing Child. Those skills help people plan, focus attention, remember instructions, multitask and more. The symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity mean people with ADHD may have trouble staying organized, concentrating, managing time or controlling impulses, which can affect all areas of life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000p3b6mh7xnbgd9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A health care provider determines a diagnosis by assessing whether symptoms are persistent, pervasive and inappropriate according to one\u2019s developmental stage, and whether they interfere with a patient\u2019s daily life. The disorder can also be associated with various additional challenges, such as mental or physical conditions, social problems and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/15\/health\/adhd-autism-early-death-risk-study-wellness\/index.html\">higher risk of premature death<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000q3b6mrudr0fsu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a serious condition. It\u2019s not a trivial one,\u201d Cortese, also chair of the European ADHD Guidelines Group, said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000r3b6m9hd0xrfj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/ng87\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the current guidelines<\/a> on the management of ADHD in the UK,\u201d Cortese said, \u201cthey recommend medication as the first line. They also mention non-pharmacological treatment if medication is not effective or not well tolerated, but they don\u2019t specify which kind of non-pharmacological treatment. They also mention the possible combination.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000s3b6moc19ys99@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are still uncertainties about the best treatment for adults with ADHD, Cortese said \u2014 so he and the other authors aimed \u201cto provide an updated synthesis of all the evidence available from trials on the pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions.\u201d The research was done in association with people with lived experience of ADHD, the authors said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000u3b6mdolwys83@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 113 published and unpublished randomized controlled trials that compared various types of interventions against placebos or other controls for the symptoms of, in total, nearly 14,900 adult participants formally diagnosed with ADHD.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000v3b6mian5pcqs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a short-term period of 12 weeks, in ratings of symptom improvement by both clinicians and patients, only stimulants, such as lisdexamfetamine and methylphenidate, and atomoxetine yielded better results than a placebo.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000w3b6mwj4bzcit@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When it came to the effectiveness of nonpharmacological treatments versus a placebo, there was a mismatch between clinicians\u2019 opinions versus those of the patients themselves. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/27\/health\/cbt-cognitive-behavioral-therapy-wellness\/index.html\">Cognitive behavioral therapy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/cognitive-remediation-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive remediation<\/a>, mindfulness, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/neuroscience\/psychoeducation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">psychoeducation<\/a> and transcranial direct current stimulation were also more effective than a placebo at reducing patients\u2019 symptoms, but this outcome was reported by clinicians only.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000x3b6mrtx0mdjl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/psychiatry\/specialty-areas\/brain-stimulation\/services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transcranial direct current stimulation<\/a> is a noninvasive, painless brain stimulation technique that uses low-intensity electrical currents to stimulate specific parts of the brain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000y3b6me2a20w7p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/01\/health\/social-anxiety-cognitive-behavioral-therapy-benefits-wellness\/index.html\">Social anxiety: How cognitive behavioral therapy can help<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt000z3b6mtgs7acaz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The authors found several other outcomes, including that medications were more likely than placebos to be discontinued due to adverse events. For emotional dysregulation, which Cortese said many people with ADHD experience, atomoxetine and stimulants were more helpful than a placebo. But for executive function and quality of life, none of the treatments performed differently than a placebo.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt00103b6m20oqxi0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are several take home points from this study, which used a very clever approach to pool and contrast different types of ADHD treatments,\u201d said Dr. Philip Shaw, professor in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology &amp; Neuroscience at King\u2019s College London, in a statement to the Science Media Centre.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt00113b6mcjoyfii8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFirst, the study shows that there are effective interventions for adults living with ADHD who are looking for ways to reduce any unwanted impact from symptoms,\u201d said Shaw, who wasn\u2019t involved in the research. \u201cThe downside was that some medications had troublesome side effects, though this wasn\u2019t the case for psychostimulants, which are the most widely used medication.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt00123b6mp1ncag9o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study also highlights \u201cbig gaps in our knowledge,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt00143b6m0gvgm7qw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The limitations of the study are due to shortcomings in the literature analyzed for the review, as well as the lack of research on some factors, said clinical psychologist Dr. Margaret Sibley, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Sibley wasn\u2019t involved in the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt00153b6mptmkcnpf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since most of the treatment trials included in the review lasted less than three months, it\u2019s hard to be sure about how long the benefits may last, Shaw said. The authors also looked at outcomes at 26 and 52 weeks, but these were limited due to an insufficient amount of data, said study author Dr. Edoardo G. Ostinelli, senior researcher and deputy lead at the University of Oxford\u2019s Oxford Precision Psychiatry Lab, in the Science Media Centre briefing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt00163b6mr36nqsc4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, \u201cnon-pharmacological treatments like (cognitive behavioral therapy) are not designed to reduce core symptoms of ADHD, although they sometimes do indirectly,\u201d Sibley said via email. \u201cThey are designed to teach coping skills to reduce the impact of symptoms on one\u2019s life. So if the primary outcome in this review had been impairment or ADHD coping skills, or psychological variables like self-worth or self-efficacy or sense of autonomy \u2014 you might have seen different findings.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt00173b6mm1ribgqi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/13\/health\/adhd-body-doubling-productivity-benefits-wellness\/index.html\">The benefits of \u2018body doubling\u2019 when you have ADHD, according to experts<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt00183b6m3o0gvgjf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s also likely that differences in effectiveness of treatments simply boil down to the fact that one size doesn\u2019t fit all, Ostinelli said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt00193b6mtnkk4nw4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some people with ADHD are apprehensive about taking medication or have experienced side effects they are uncomfortable with, said Dr. Alessio Bellato, a lecturer in child and adolescent mental health at the University of Southampton who wasn\u2019t involved in the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t49vwt001a3b6mc5iz0ghc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe review also points out a continual challenge when conducting ADHD research with adults,\u201d Sibley added. \u201cSelf-perception of ADHD symptoms is fallible in all people. They are somewhat subjective symptoms. However, there are no \u2018objective\u2019 tests that can accurately measure ADHD symptoms.
