Mammals are the last surviving members of this ancient group, so this \u201cdog-like\u201d relative is changing what they thought they knew about this therapsid and giving them new insights into where we come from.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Discovered on the Spanish island of Mallorca, the fossil might not have a species name yet as it was just discovered. However, researchers have identified when it lived and to which group classification it belongs. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>As a member of the gorgonopsians, they\u2019re \u201cmore closely related to mammals than they are to any other living animals,\u201d says Ken Angielczyk, co-author of a recently published paper and the Field Museum\u2019s MacArthur Curator of Paleomammalogy in the Negaunee Integrative Research Center. \u201cWhile they\u2019re not our direct ancestors, they\u2019re related to the species that were our direct ancestors,\u201d he continues in a press release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cdog-like\u201d animal lived 270-250 million years ago before the age of the dinosaurs. It is \u201cmost likely the oldest gorgonopsian on the planet,\u201d says Josep Fortuny, senior author of the article\u00a0and head of the Computational Biomechanics and Evolution of Life History group at the Institut Catal\u00e0 de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (ICP) in Spain. During three different campaigns, however, they uncovered a surprisingly large number of gorgonopsians bones in the municipality of Banyalbufar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have found everything from fragments of skull, vertebrae, and ribs to a very well-preserved femur,\u201d explains\u00a0Rafel Matamales, curator of the Museu Balear de Ci\u00e8ncies Naturals (MUCBO | MBCN) and research associate at the Institut Catal\u00e0 de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (ICP), and first author of the article in a press release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the wealth of bones uncovered, they reconstructed what the animal looked like. \u201cIf you saw this animal walking down the street, it would look a little bit like a medium-sized dog\u2026It didn\u2019t have any fur, and it wouldn\u2019t have had dog-like ears,\u201d says Angielczyk. \u201cBut it\u2019s the oldest animal scientists have ever found with long, blade-like canine teeth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Additionally, a nearly complete leg even enabled researchers to study how the animal moved. It seemed to exist between a reptile and a mammal as their legs, in contrast to reptiles, were positioned more vertically, which was more efficient. The <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/culture\/35000-year-old-well-preserved-saber-toothed-kitten-discovered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">saber teeth<\/a> confirmed that it was a carnivorous animal, a shared trait between all gorgonopsians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/science\/tiny-bone-string-solves-sabertooths-purr-roar-mystery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">saber teeth<\/a> are a common feature in large predators of ecosystems, and what we have found was likely one in the environment in which it lived,\u201d adds\u00a0\u00c0ngel Galobart, researchers at the ICP and director of the Museu de la Conca <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1067818\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dell\u00e0<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-million-years-older-than-its-closest-relatives\">10 million years older than its closest relatives<\/h2>\n<p>Most significantly, the unnamed gorgonopsian predates its closest relatives by tens of millions of years. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore the time of <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/culture\/juvenile-crocodile-fossil-peru-discovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">dinosaurs<\/a>, there was an age of ancient mammal relatives. Most of those ancient mammal relatives looked really different from what we think of mammals looking like today,\u201d says Angielczyk. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cBut they were really diverse and played lots of different ecological roles.
