It\u2019s also not clear what shape the possible joint-venture could take. <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Business\/Automobiles\/Honda-and-Nissan-to-begin-merger-talks-amid-EV-competition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikkei<\/a> first reported the news of a potential tie-up Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t66gld0007356m9dgkjjir@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAs announced in March, Honda and Nissan are exploring various possibilities for future collaboration, leveraging each other\u2019s strengths,\u201d the companies said in a statement Tuesday. \u201cIf there are any updates, we will inform our stakeholders at the appropriate time.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t68ylc000b356m2r6axyj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In March, Honda and Nissan announced that they would partner on electric vehicles and in August said they would collaborate on battery technology. But they could benefit from deepening their ties as both have faced challenges this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t6g7oo000e356ma76v86pg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both companies, like many non-Chinese automakers, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/12\/17\/cars\/automakers-china-losses\/index.html\">struggled in the once-promising China market<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest market for cars. Chinese consumers had flocked to foreign brands but have largely shifted to domestic brands, which have better perceived value in the country. China\u2019s government has also provided incentives to help speed up customer adoption of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t6l9cf000j356mqk8epycv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although both companies offer EVs and plug-ins \u2013 Nissan, in particular, was a pioneer in EV technology \u2013 Chinese brands like BYD have eclipsed their technology and are priced more cheaply.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t6pl4n000m356mvskgxf2q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nissan has also struggled since its former CEO, Carlos Ghosn, became a fugitive, fleeing Japan for his native Lebanon. Ghosn was arrested in Tokyo in 2018 on suspicion of financial misconduct, and Nissan fired him. Ghosn has repeatedly denied the charges.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t6wcjj000r356mdthjiwb9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            His ouster shook up the powerful automaking alliance among Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi. Once the largest automaking partnership in the world, Renault has since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/30\/investing\/renault-nissan-new-alliance-plans-intl-hnk\/index.html\">sharply reduced<\/a> its ownership stake in Nissan, weakening the Japanese automaker.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t6r1qc000p356ms193425x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nissan said that its operating income between March and September fell 90% from the same period in the previous year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4t70j8r000u356moemhtgba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile Honda, which is roughly five times the size of Nissan, also faces challenges. The company announced plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/04\/23\/business\/honda-emissions-free-future\/index.html\">sell only zero-emission vehicles in major markets by 2040<\/a>.
