These constructors have collaborated just once before in The New York Times, and it resulted in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/29\/crosswords\/daily-puzzle-2024-07-30.html\" title=\"\">a humdinger<\/a> of a Tuesday puzzle. So when I saw their byline above today\u2019s grid, I was ready to take my chances. And reader: The risk was well worth the reward.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-177cfbd\">Today\u2019s Theme<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If you CONSIDER THE ODDS, it means that you [Think before placing a bet]. Interpreted another way, however, this expression hints at hidden layers in the entries to the starred clues. At 18-Across, for instance, [Mendel studied them] solves to GREEN PEAS. By focusing on the odd letters of this phrase, we get GENES \u2014 what Mendel\u2019s study of peas <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/25520230\/online-education-kit-1865-mendels-peas\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">was all about<\/a>. The [Book designer\u2019s concern] at 46-Across is FOOTNOTE, but with odd letters only it\u2019s FONT. (Gray-shaded squares indicate the odd letters in each theme entry, so you can make certain you\u2019re looking in the right place.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Odds bodkins! Or, as we say in modern times, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/e\/slang\/i-cant-even\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">I can\u2019t even<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4acaa460\">Tricky Clues<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">51A. You don\u2019t need any [Morel support?] unless you\u2019re a variety of mushroom, the supporting part of which is a STEM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">70A. I\u2019m consistently amazed at constructors\u2019 creativity in cluing (say that three times fast).
