Trump selected Herschel Walker on Tuesday to be the U.S. ambassador to the small Caribbean nation of the Bahamas, turning to a longtime ally and former football star who generated national headlines in his failed run for a Senate seat in Georgia in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a statement on social media, Mr. Trump highlighted Mr. Walker\u2019s athletic record as qualifying him for the position, in addition to a role in the first Trump administration as a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox19.com\/2022\/03\/24\/herschel-walker-dr-oz-removed-bidens-sports-council\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">co-chairman of the President\u2019s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/96846\/herschel_walker_shares_his_battle_against_mental_illness_with_fort_drum_soldiers\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">speaking appearances discussing mental health issues.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHerschel has spent decades serving as an ambassador to our nation\u2019s youth, our men and women in the military, and athletes at home and abroad,\u201d Mr. Trump said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Walker rose to the national political stage in 2022 after he was handpicked by Mr. Trump to challenge Senator Raphael Warnock for his Senate seat in Georgia. A political neophyte buoyed by his football stardom, Mr. Walker ran a campaign shadowed by incendiary statements and damaging revelations <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/07\/us\/politics\/herschel-walker-abortion.html\" title=\"\">about his personal life and business career.<\/a> Mr. Warnock <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/12\/06\/us\/elections\/results-georgia-us-senate-runoff.html\" title=\"\">ultimately defeated Mr. Walker<\/a> even as Republicans won every other statewide race.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Walker\u2019s relationship with Mr. Trump stretches back to the early 1980s, when the football star joined the New Jersey Generals, a United States Football League team then owned by Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump wrote in his book \u201cThe Art of the Deal\u201d that he would berate the team\u2019s coach for not properly using Mr. Walker\u2019s talents. Nearly 40 years later, Mr. Trump endorsed Mr. Walker early in the Senate campaign, despite concerns from some Republicans about Mr. Walker\u2019s personal history, clearing a path through the primary for his failed challenge against Mr. Warnock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Walker has no previous diplomatic experience, and no obvious ties to the Bahamas, an island nation of about 400,000 people just off the coast of Florida. That is not unusual for those appointed as ambassadors to smaller or less politically significant assignments, which often go to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/cr.usembassy.gov\/ambassador\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">top donors<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jp.usembassy.gov\/ambassador-rahm-emanuel\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">party officials<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/bb.usembassy.gov\/ambassador-roger-f-nyhus-arrives-in-barbados\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">business leaders<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/bz.usembassy.gov\/ambassador-michelle-kwan\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">star athletes<\/a> or other high-profile figures. They are then usually supported in their overseas missions by career diplomats from the State Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The announcement also caps a run of potential appointments for Republicans who lost recent Senate races in Georgia. Former Senator Kelly Loeffler, who was unseated by Mr. Warnock, was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/04\/us\/politics\/kelly-loeffler-trump-small-business-administration.html\" title=\"\">picked to run the Small Business Administration<\/a>. And former Senator David Perdue, who lost his seat to Senator Jon Ossoff, was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/05\/us\/politics\/david-perdue-trump-china-ambassador.html\" title=\"\">selected to be ambassador to China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The United States has not had a permanent ambassador to the Bahamas in over a decade, with several nominees stuck in limbo because the Senate never acted on their appointments. Both of Mr. Trump\u2019s nominees for ambassador to the Bahamas in his first term stalled out. President Biden\u2019s pick for the job, Calvin Smyre, was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/05\/13\/president-biden-announces-key-nominees-15\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced in May 2022<\/a>.
