{"id":138455,"date":"2024-12-18T16:23:02","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T09:23:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=138455"},"modified":"2024-12-18T16:23:02","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T09:23:02","slug":"former-nfl-qb-michael-vick-to-become-coach-at-norfolk-state-source","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=138455","title":{"rendered":"Former NFL QB Michael Vick to become coach at Norfolk State: Source"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Michael Vick has been a college football phenom, an <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/\">NFL<\/a> star, a convicted felon, a cautionary tale, a comeback player of the year and, recently, he became a hall of famer.<\/p>\n<p>Now, he\u2019s Coach Vick.<\/p>\n<p>Norfolk State, a historically black FCS school in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in Vick\u2019s home state, is hiring the former <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"171\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/virginia-tech-hokies-college-football\/\">Virginia Tech<\/a> quarterback whose NFL career was interrupted when he served nearly two years in prison to be its head coach on Tuesday, sources briefed on the situation told <em>The Athletic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The move was not immediately announced by the school, but Vick\u2019s former high school coach and longtime mentor Tommy Reamon told <em>The Athletic<\/em> he has been advising Vick on a coaching career and plans to join his staff at Norfolk State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so excited for him to do this because I think he\u2019ll be a great coach,\u201d Reamon said. \u201cHe\u2019s so personable, and he is charismatic. You\u2019ve gotta be charismatic (to coach) in 2024, and that\u2019s why he is gonna win. I\u2019m excited to watch him as he communicates with the children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilotonline.com\/2024\/12\/17\/michael-vick-has-been-hired-as-norfolk-states-coach-sources-say\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Virginian-Pilot<\/a> first reported the hiring. Vick told the newspaper: \u201cI know how to lead and I know what it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hiring echoes similar moves by other HBCUs in recent years, handing their football programs over to high-profile former NFL stars. Most notably, Deion Sanders started his college coaching career at Jackson State before jumping to Colorado after three seasons at the SWAC school. Eddie George, the former <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"222\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/ohio-bobcats-college-football\/\">Ohio<\/a> State Heisman Trophy winner and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"61\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/titans\/\">Tennessee Titans<\/a> star, is in his fourth season as head coach at Tennessee State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bet he and I have talked about Deion\u2019s situation, and him 100 times,\u201d Reamon said. \u201cThose two kids (Vick and Sanders) are perfect examples of taking their talent, with all that charisma, to then become a head coach football today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael has the voice. People are gonna relate to him especially when we get in these houses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vick will replace Dawson Odums, who was 15-31 in four seasons with Norfolk State.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5998807\/2024\/12\/16\/michael-vick-norfolk-state-head-coach-talks\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/12\/16123836\/MikeVick-1024x683.jpg?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">Michael Vick talks to Norfolk State, Sacramento State about head-coaching jobs<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vick, 44, grew up in Newport News, Va., about 25 miles north of Norfolk, and went to Virginia Tech, where he led the Hokies to the national title game against <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"166\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/florida-state-seminoles-college-football\/\">Florida State<\/a> after the 1999 season as one of the most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks in college football history. Vick played two thrilling seasons at Virginia Tech, finishing third in the Heisman voting as a redshirt freshman in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came and talked to our team at South Carolina in August of 2021 and I knew then that he had a passion for possibly coaching,\u201d said <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"4183\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/jacksonville-state-gamecocks\/\">Gamecocks<\/a> coach Shane Beamer, who has been friends with Vick since 1998 and whose father, Frank, coached Vick at Virginia Tech. \u201cI\u2019m really excited for him and I know he will crush it at Norfolk State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vick was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in January.<\/p>\n<p>He jumped to the NFL after three years in Blacksburg and became the No. 1 overall pick for the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"32\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/falcons\/\">Atlanta Falcons<\/a> in 2001. Vick\u2019s NFL career took off in 2004 when he led the Falcons to the NFC championship game. In 2006, he became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.<\/p>\n<p>At the height of his stardom and peak of his physical performance, Vick\u2019s downfall was shocking. In 2007, Vick pleaded guilty to being involved in a dog fighting ring at a property he owned in rural Virginia and was sentenced to nearly two years in prison. He also had to pay back parts of his multimillion-dollar contract with the Falcons.<\/p>\n<p>Vick was released from prison in 2009 and pledged to use his demise as a lesson for others. His return to the NFL with <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"54\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/eagles\/\">Philadelphia<\/a> drew protests, but he went on to play seven more seasons in the league, becoming a starter for the Eagles from 2010-12.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the script.
