Director Jeff Fowler comes full circle after working on animations for 2005\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadow The Hedgehog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platformer, benefiting from existing connections to SEGA\u2019s gun-happy bad-boy hedgehog. Writers Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington formulate Sonic\u2019s latest adventure well, going all-in on the strangeness of these animalian aliens. The film is passionate about Sonic\u2019s lore, as made evident by direct <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic Adventure 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadow The Hedgehog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> callbacks, but that doesn\u2019t supersede its familial appeal. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an action-packed blast from start to finish that should please even the prickliest Green Hill Zone groupies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/sonic-the-hedgehog-2-review-jim-carrey-ben-schwartz-idr-1848748873\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 2<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concluded with a Shadow teaser, and that\u2019s precisely where Paramount\u2019s second sequel begins. Keanu Reeves\u2019 tortured Shadow, a red-streaked hedgehog, escapes \u201cPrison Island\u201d in Tokyo. Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O\u2019Shaughnessey), and Knuckles (Idris Elba) are called into action by the Director of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guardian Units of Nations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Rockwell (Krysten Ritter), and asked to defeat Shadow. \u201cTeam Sonic\u201d accepts G.U.N.\u2019s mission but quickly realizes they\u2019ll need extra support to defeat their super-strong and teleporting foe. That leads the trio to Sonic\u2019s arch-nemesis, Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey), an unlikely ally\u2014and, naturally, G.U.N.\u2019s hiding something from Earth\u2019s anthropomorphic defenders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- admarker --> <!-- inlinecontent_1 --> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hefty mountain of lore is plowed through in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but Fowler excels at making everything digestible. Team Sonic\u2019s quest to defeat Shadow is filled with obstacles that develop deeper friendships between the main animal crew, while Dr. Robotnik reunites with his diabolical grandpappy Gerald Robotnik (also Carrey). The performer is splendid in the dual role, single-handedly generating generational chemistry. Then there\u2019s Shadow\u2019s heartbreaking backstory as G.U.N.\u2019s guinea pig, explaining his quest for revenge on behalf of the only Earthling he ever cared about, Maria Robotnik (Alyla Browne). All that, and Lee Majdoub still finds room to steal scenes as Robotnik\u2019s underappreciated yet devoted assistant, or Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter) teaching Sonic valuable life lessons. It\u2019s a lot of narrative to grapple, yet the film never feels overburdened or clumsily mapped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps that\u2019s because <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learns from the clunky <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and readjusts accordingly. There\u2019s nothing unfamiliar here: Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles fight against another grumpy lookalike (Shadow) with the inevitable outcome already in sight. That\u2019s what happened last time. But where <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">favored interventions from the Wachowskis, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lets its animated heroes shine. There\u2019s less \u201clive\u201d in this impressively blended live-action movie, which is not a detriment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- admarker --> <!-- inlinecontent_2 --> <\/p>\n<div class=\"grid-x articles-inline-insert\" id=\"inline-related-articles\">\n<ul class=\"articles grid-margin-x flex-container flex-dir-column\">\n<li class=\"grid-x grid-padding-x\"><a class=\"auto cell copy-container noimage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/sonic-the-hedgehog-3-trailer\"><b class=\"title\">Keanu Reeves&#8217; Shadow is just too powerful in new <i>Sonic The Hedgehog 3<\/i> trailer<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"grid-x grid-padding-x\"><a class=\"auto cell copy-container noimage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/jim-carrey-is-coming-back-to-sonic-the-hedgehog-3-1851223252\"><b class=\"title\">Parents rejoice: Jim Carrey is coming back to make <i>Sonic The Hedgehog 3 <\/i>bearable<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A whopping six studios collaborated on endless visual effects: Rising Sun Pictures, Rodeo FX, Industrial Light &amp; Magic, Fin, Marza Animation Planet, and a Paramount in-house team. The outcome is misleading, given how the animation shows no stitches or signs of task divisions. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> features the franchise\u2019s most daunting pixelated demands yet, between Gerald Robotnik\u2019s cosmic death ray and multiple Shadow vs. Sonic throwdowns. The sprawling VFX team is the film\u2019s MVP, delivering pristine renderings while keeping pace with the high-intensity boss battles. As electric energy pulsates, colored light trails \u00e0 la <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tron <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chase the protagonists. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have looked great, but Fowler\u2019s collaborators raise the bar again. This all allows the voice actors to disappear into their white-gloved characters, conveying all the warmth and melodrama found in the film\u2019s themes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even better, the threequel\u2019s writers are allowed to be dorkier in its references. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aligns closer to Paramount+\u2019s sneakily riotous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/knuckles-review-paramount-plus-tv-sonic-idris-elba-1851405350\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knuckles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> television show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than prior Sonic films, playing goofier and breaking unexpected rules. Comedic highlights include softball shots at other movies (Ryan Reynolds\u2019 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Lantern<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to fourth-wall-breaking admissions from character to audience. And Carrey is uncontainable, playing two deranged cartoon villains who indulge in outlandish behaviors like a glamorously choreographed laser-security dance number straight out of a Daft Punk music video. Fowler keeps <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marvelously madcap in kid-friendly ways, but still includes bits for the elder SEGA Genesis devotees, like Cristo Fern\u00e1ndez\u2019s telenovela interludes, pet subtitles, and hologram masks of felt ventriloquist puppets. There\u2019s a daring unpredictability to the film\u2019s sense of humor that\u2019s excitingly addictive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- admarker --> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the video game references are inescapable, balancing blatant callbacks and creative implementations of Sonic\u2019s universe. Take \u201cChao Gardens,\u201d a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant with costumed Chao performers you can chuckle at without purchasing a special SEGA Dreamcast VMU memory card. Shadow\u2019s motorcycle and handgun combo earn their spotlight, as do the musical cues, none more blissful than Crush 40\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic Adventure 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z1BRZg0GG0A\"> theme song<\/a> \u201cLive and Learn\u201d hitting at a pivotal moment during composer Tom Holkenborg\u2019s third-act crescendo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic The Hedgehog 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> proves that more of the same can actually yield positive results. Reeves adds to the established voice cast adding his stoic somberness to the tragic Shadow, while double the Carrey means double the looniness. The third film<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refreshes what\u2019s worked and improves what hasn\u2019t, punching the franchise into overdrive and letting Sonic sprint laps around the outings of other video game icons, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/super-mario-bros-movie-review-1850296739\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Super Mario Bros.
