But you can manage your joint health during your trip.<\/p>\n<p>Economy flying, in particular, is known to cause soreness and stiffness. That\u2019s why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/dr-alexander-john-butler-md-11516526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Alexander Butler<\/a>, spine surgeon and associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, is sharing six tips for being more comfortable from takeoff to landing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFailing to prepare is preparing to fail!\u201d Butler told The Post. \u201cA little prep work ahead of time can go a long way to ameliorate the potentially harmful effects of flying on your health.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pack smart<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Butler prefers carry-on luggage with wheels that can be placed in the overhead bin. <span class=\"credit\">Shutter2U \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cGenerally speaking, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/article\/best-luggage-brands\/\">rolling carry-on luggage<\/a> makes transport through the airport much simpler,\u201d Butler said.<\/p>\n<p>He suggests taking advantage of the overhead bin so you can use the space beneath the seat in front of you to arrange your legs into the least painful position.<\/p>\n<p>If you have trouble lifting your luggage, ask a fellow passenger or an airline employee for help.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stretch before the flight<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Butler recommends performing a series of stretches twice a day several days before boarding the plane. <span class=\"credit\">Satori Studio \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Prolonged sitting can tighten hip flexors and hamstrings and weaken abdominal muscles and glutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis leads to anterior tilt of the pelvis, which is a very common cause of low back pain,\u201d Butler explained.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re prone to back pain after flying, Butler recommends performing a series of movements twice a day several days before boarding the plane.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ISmkMbP_RZk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hip flexor exercises<\/a> stretch the muscles in the upper thigh that stabilize the hip.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/24\/health\/fitness-trainer-reveals-6-tips-to-avoid-vacation-weight-gain\/\">Cossack squats<\/a> are a spin on the traditional squat that involves shifting almost all your body weight to one leg at a time.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/14\/health\/victorias-secret-trainers-5-moves-to-get-models-runway-ready\/\">The bird dog stretch<\/a> is a core-strengthening exercise that requires getting on all fours, engaging your abs, drawing your shoulder blades together, extending your right arm and left leg and then switching to your left arm and right leg.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u6MyUNgvhww\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lying glute bridge<\/a> has you lying on your back with your knees bent and lifting your hips off the ground by squeezing your glutes.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thewell.northwell.edu\/joint-health-orthopedics\/back-pain-stretches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planks<\/a> can strengthen your back and stabilize your core.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose the right seat<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>An aisle seat allows you to get up and move about the cabin more easily. <span class=\"credit\">DC Studio \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you don\u2019t already have an assigned seat on the plane, go for the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo minimize prolonged periods in a single position, I think it is highly beneficial to get up, stand or walk for several minutes at least once per hour while on a long flight,\u201d Butler said. \u201cAn aisle seat can make this much more convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adjust your posture<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Finding a comfortable position can be hard on a plane. Butler recommends taking an electrolyte supplement to help with the absorption and retention of fluids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy favorite trick is to pack an empty water bottle and a nutritious meal with a disposable container in my carry-on,\u201d Butler advised. \u201cThis keeps me well-hydrated and well-fueled without needing to spend extra money on whatever is offered before or during the flight.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relieve pain after the flight<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Stretching and other movements can minimize pain from flying. <span class=\"credit\">kadosafia \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you\u2019re feeling pain during the flight or after landing, Butler suggests a combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
