{"id":138702,"date":"2024-12-19T07:54:06","date_gmt":"2024-12-19T00:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=138702"},"modified":"2024-12-19T07:54:06","modified_gmt":"2024-12-19T00:54:06","slug":"journal-retracts-study-that-promoted-hydroxychloroquine-as-covid-treatment-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=138702","title":{"rendered":"Journal retracts study that promoted hydroxychloroquine as Covid treatment | Coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">A controversial study that promoted hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug, as a treatment for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/coronavirus-outbreak\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Covid-19<\/a> has officially been withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">On Tuesday, Elsevier, a Dutch academic publishing company which owns the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, issued the retraction of the March 2020 study, saying \u201cconcerns have been raised regarding this article, the substance of which relate to the articles\u2019 adherence to Elsevier\u2019s publishing ethics policies and the appropriate conduct of research involving human participants\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Elsevier added that concerns had also been raised by \u201cthree of the authors themselves regarding the article\u2019s methodology and conclusions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">An investigation by Elsevier\u2019s research integrity and publishing ethics team, as well as the journal\u2019s co-owner, the International Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, found multiple issues within the study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0924857920300996?via%3Dihub\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to<\/a> a lengthy retraction notice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Among those include the journal being unable to confirm whether any of the patients involved in the study were acquired before ethical approval had been obtained. The journal has also not been able to establish whether there was equipoise between the study patients and the control patients. <a href=\"https:\/\/healthjournalism.org\/glossary-terms\/equipoise\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">According to<\/a> the Association of Healthcare Journalists, equipoise is the \u201cgenuine uncertainty within the expert medical community \u2013 not necessarily on the part of the individual investigator \u2013 about the preferred treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The retraction notice also said that the journal has not been able to establish whether the subjects in this study should have provided informed consent to receive azithromycin as part of the study. According to the original study, the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid would increase if used with azithromycin, an antibiotic. It went on to add that there is \u201creasonable cause to conclude that azithromycin was not considered standard care at the time of the study\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Since the study\u2019s publication, three of its authors, Johan Courjon, Val\u00e9rie Giordanengo and St\u00e9phane Honor\u00e9, have contacted the journal to express their concerns \u201cregarding the presentation and interpretation of results\u201d and stated that they \u201cno longer wish to see their names associated with the article\u201d. Meanwhile, several other authors disagree with the retraction and dispute the grounds for it, the retraction notice said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-04014-9\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">According to<\/a> Nature, the study is the highest-cited paper on Covid-19 to be retracted, as well as the second-most-cited retracted paper overall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">In March 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-daily-roundup-march-30-2020\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">issued<\/a> an emergency use authorization that allowed for the stockpiling of hydroxychloroquine, as well as its distribution and use for certain hospitalized patients with Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Then US president Donald Trump also touted hydroxychloroquine as a miracle drug for Covid-19, at one point <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2020\/may\/19\/trump-hydroxychloroquine-covid-19-white-house\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">claiming<\/a> that he was taking the drug prophylactically. Earlier this year, a study published in the peer-reviewed Biomedicine &amp; Pharmacotherapy journal found that people who took hydroxychloroquine were 11% more likely to die from Covid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Following the study\u2019s retraction, the French Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics <a href=\"https:\/\/sfpt-fr.org\/vie-de-la-sfpt\/communiques-sfpt\/2097-retractation-de-letude-gautret-et-coll-hydroxychloroquine-azithromycine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">issued<\/a> a statement, saying that the study \u201cconstitutes a clear example of scientific misconduct, marked by data manipulation and bias in the interpretation of results, aimed at falsely presenting hydroxychloroquine as effective\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">\u201cThis highly controversial study was the cornerstone of a global scandal.
