href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/01\/11\/sports\/emmy-scheme-played-role-in-espn-exec-lee-fittings-dismissal\/\">dismissal of top executive Lee Fitting<\/a> \u2014 a senior vice president of production who had been at the company for more than 25 years \u2014 was a mystery for many at the company in August 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Others were shocked that it hadn\u2019t happened much sooner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6000968\/2024\/12\/18\/lee-fitting-espn-college-gameday-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to The Athletic<\/a>, which reported Wednesday that Fittings\u2019 dismissal occurred after an HR complaint about inappropriate behavior in 2023. <\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the complaint was made, an investigation took place, which included ESPN officials questioning multiple employees, including \u201csome prominent female staffers.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>A memo sent by Norby Williamson, another top exec at ESPN, on Aug. 21, 2023, said Fitting was \u201cno longer with the company\u201d and ESPN would be \u201cfinalizing a new production structure\u201d for the shows he oversaw, including \u201cCollege GameDay\u201d and \u201cMonday Night Football.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He was escorted out of the building by security just one week before the 2023 college football and NFL seasons. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lee Fitting was dismissed by ESPN last year. <span class=\"credit\">Stephen Lovekin \/ Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Fitting joined WWE as the company\u2019s head of media and production in January, five months after he was ousted at ESPN.  <\/p>\n<p>The Athletic spoke to more than 20 women \u2014 including six who participated in the network\u2019s 2023 investigation \u2014 who described a workplace culture under Fitting that had offensive and sexual language, including lewd jokes about women and their appearance. <\/p>\n<p>The women, who are current and former employees of the network, requested anonymity because they still work in sports media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t believe it took this long,\u201d one woman said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter him,\u201d another added. <\/p>\n<p>Multiple people recalled incidents in which Fitting allegedly made comments or gestures about women, including times when they were not present \u2014 which Fitting denied. <\/p>\n<p>Fitting also allegedly bragged about his and his wife\u2019s robust sex life, multiple sources told The Athletic. <\/p>\n<p>In 2012, some ESPN employees were in a conference room in Bristol, Conn., to watch the NCAA men\u2019s basketball tournament when Fitting allegedly made a comment about a woman \u2014 who was not present \u2014 and her ability to \u201copen her throat\u201d to down a beer, and then joked that the woman would be good at performing oral sex, according to one person present. <\/p>\n<p>In 2014, there were no chairs available for a woman to sit on during a production meeting, and Fitting patted his lap and said to her: \u201cI\u2019ve got a seat right here for you,\u201d\u00a0a person in the room said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image 2018. <\/p>\n<p>Another ESPN employee said she was warned by other women not to meet with Fitting alone while outside of work. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen had warned each other to be conscious of interactions with him,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>Some \u201cCollege GameDay\u201d employees said Fitting would jokingly ask female staffers for their hotel room number and often joked about performing bed checks. <\/p>\n<p>A source told The Athletic that Fitting would make crude jokes in front of women, and he\u2019d use the phrase,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s OK, she\u2019s one of the guys.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Fitting was also part of ESPN\u2019s Emmy scandal. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other allegations include Fitting texting an ESPN employee, \u201cYou look hot,\u201d and him insisting that an on-air talent wear her hair in a ponytail before telling her, \u201cPut your hair up in a ponytail before I do it for you,\u201d which he denied. <\/p>\n<p>Fitting declined to comment on \u201cthe broader characterization of him as someone who mistreated women during his tenure at ESPN or why he was let go by the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to The Athletic, the women affected by Fitting\u2019s alleged behavior felt as though they had to stay quiet to keep their jobs, let alone advance professionally, at ESPN. <\/p>\n<p>Fitting\u2019s involvement in the infamous \u201cCollege GameDay\u201d Emmy scandal did play a \u201cfactor\u201d in his dismissal,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewMarchand\/status\/1745501221174051098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Athletic\u2019s Andrew
