{"id":138854,"date":"2024-12-19T18:03:05","date_gmt":"2024-12-19T11:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=138854"},"modified":"2024-12-19T18:03:05","modified_gmt":"2024-12-19T11:03:05","slug":"us-repatriates-3-guantanamo-bay-detainees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=138854","title":{"rendered":"US repatriates 3 Guantanamo Bay detainees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The U.S. has transferred two Malaysian detainees at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. military prison to their home country, after they pleaded guilty to charges related to deadly 2002 bombings in Bali and agreed to testify against the alleged ringleader of that and other attacks, the Pentagon said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The transfers, and the repatriation Tuesday of a Kenyan man who\u2019d been held at Guantanamo for 17 years without charge, come as rights groups and others push the Biden administration to end the detention of more than a dozen other men held there without charge, and amid uncertainty over the incoming Trump administration\u2019s plans for Guantanamo.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors say Mohammed Farik bin Amin and Mohammed Nazir bin Lep worked for years with Encep Nurjaman, known as Hambali, an Indonesian leader of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/al-qaida\">al-Qaida<\/a><\/span> affiliate <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/jemaah-islamiyah\">Jemaah Islamiya<\/a><\/span>. That includes helping Nurjaman escape capture after <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/australia-indonesia-bombings-bali-296097b9477d85b8e764b9ea1339e550\">Oct. 12, 2002 bombings<\/a><\/span> that killed 202 people at two night spots in Bali, U.S. officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The two men entered guilty pleas to conspiracy and other charges in January. Their transfer comes after they provided testimony that prosecutors plan to use in the future against Nurjaman, the alleged mastermind, the Pentagon said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Nurjaman is in custody in Guantanamo awaiting resumption of pre-trial hearings in January involving the Bali bombings and other attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The two Malaysian men\u2019s transfers leave 27 detainees in custody at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay. <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/george-w-bush\">President George W. Bush<\/a><\/span> set up a military tribunal and prison <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/september-11-attacks\">after the Sept. 11, 2001 al-Qaida attacks<\/a><\/span> on the U.S. <\/p>\n<p>Bin Lep\u2019s Texas-based lawyer Brian Bouffard said it was unclear when his client might be released into the Malaysian community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that he will be monitored by Malaysian authorities. There\u2019s not going to be any opportunity for him to get in trouble even if he were inclined to want to get in trouble. That\u2019s not what he wants,\u201d Bouffard said.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysian Home Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said in a statement the pair would undergo a comprehensive reintegration program that would include support in social services, welfare and health. <\/p>\n<p>Malaysian police said in a statement the men returned to their homeland on Wednesday and would remain in custody for the duration of a rehabilitation program. Police did not say how long their incarceration would last.<\/p>\n<p>Both were grateful to be back in Malaysia and committed to the rehabilitation process, police said.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 202 killed in the attack, 88 were Australians. Australian survivors and victims\u2019 families were critical of the prospect of the Malaysians being freed.<\/p>\n<p>A bomb killed two members of Tim Weatherald\u2019s Australian rules football team who he had been on vacation with in Bali.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing for me is they showed no remorse. From my point of view, if they showed a bit of remorse, and a bit of care but they almost seem proud of what they have done. So I have no issue with them not ever seeing the light of day again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong\u2019s office said in a statement she had conveyed to the United States and Malaysia \u201cour close interest in this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the arrangements for the transfer are a matter for the Malaysian and U.S. governments, we have sought assurances from the Malaysian government that the individuals will be subject to ongoing supervision and monitoring,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>At peak, Guantanamo detained hundreds of men, most Muslim, in the U.S. military\u2019s \u201cwar on terror\u201d after the Sept. 11 attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Just two of the men at Guantanamo are serving sentences. U.S. prosecution of seven others currently facing charges has been slowed by legal obstacles \u2014 including those presented by the torture of the men in their first years under CIA custody \u2014 and logistical difficulties. <\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, U.S. authorities <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Releases\/Release\/Article\/4008142\/guantanamo-bay-detainee-transfer-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repatriated<\/a><\/span> a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-27313a9324b34f779dc691087c259cd6\">Kenyan man<\/a><\/span>, Mohammed Abdul Malik Bajabu, after 17 years at Guantanamo without charge. <\/p>\n<p>His release leaves 15 other never-charged men awaiting release. The U.S. says it is searching for suitable countries willing to take them. Many are from Yemen, a country split by war and dominated by an Iranian-allied militant group.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/amnesty-international\">Amnesty International<\/a><\/span> urged President <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/joe-biden\">Joe Biden<\/a><\/span> to end the detention of those never-charged men before he leaves office.
