Mindy McCormick, 67, read that her insurer would soon stop covering the weight loss drug Wegovy, which she had been taking for more than two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">What?<\/em> she remembers thinking. <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">They\u2019re just going to take it away from me?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She sent photos of the letter to her physician, Dr. Andrew Kraftson. His inbox was full of panicked emails from patients. Nearly 9,000 people across the state had received similar letters from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many of Dr. Kraftson\u2019s patients asked the same question as Ms. McCormick: \u201cWhat are we going to do now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over the past few months, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the state\u2019s largest insurer, has scaled back on coverage of the weight-loss drugs Wegovy, Zepbound and Saxenda.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These drugs are life-changing \u2014 in some people\u2019s minds, lifesaving. But they can cost over $1,000 a month without insurance. The decision in Michigan reflects a shift underway nationwide, as insurers and employers pull back on paying for weight-loss drugs. This year, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/26\/business\/obesity-drugs-insurance-north-carolina.html\" title=\"\">North Carolina<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/25\/health\/obesity-ozempic-wegovy-west-virginia.html\" title=\"\">West Virginia<\/a> have both restricted coverage for the medications for state employees.
