Bloody and bruised, he crash lands in a frozen landscape. His breathing is labored, like he\u2019s got fluid in his lungs, or maybe some broken ribs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThen, there is hope on the horizon \u2014 in the form of his trusty friend, Krypto. \u201cTake me home,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/superman\/\" id=\"auto-tag_superman_1\" data-tag=\"superman\">Superman<\/a> says to his canine friend, later in the trailer (below).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s one of only two spoken lines in the piece \u2014 the other is a young boy, eyes closed and holding a makeshift flag who mutters \u201cSuperman, Superman\u201d in desperate hope \u2014 but it\u2019s a line that points to a hope <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/james-gunn-creature-commandos-superman-1236076004\/\">writer-director James Gunn <\/a>wanted to imbue his new film.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCreated in 1939, Superman for decades embodied his motto, \u201cTruth, Justice and the American Way,\u201d with the character serving as a symbol for the good things America could represent for the world. That notion has become more complicated in recent years, leading DC to officially drop the motto, in favor of \u201cTruth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow\u201d in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDuring a trailer launch event for the press on Monday on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, Gunn was asked how he incorporated the decency Superman can represent for America and the rest of the world into the movie<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI think that\u2019s what \u2018Take me home is all about,\u2019\u201d Gunn said. \u201cWe do have sort of a battered vision of Superman at the beginning, and I think that is our country. I believe in the goodness of human beings, and I believe that most people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs or their politics, are doing their best to get by and trying to be good people, despite what it may seem like for the other side, no matter what that other side might be,\u201d continued Gunn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThere is much riding on <em>Superman<\/em>, which arrives July 11 as the first solo movie for the character since 2013\u2019s <em>Man of Steel<\/em>. It is the cornerstone property for DC Studios co-chiefs Gunn and Peter Safran, who have an entire universe of TV and films planned after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav hired them with the mandate to re-invent DC. Thus, the team is already doing everything it can to build excitement, including the early reception with the press that also included stars David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/nosferatu-director-nicholas-hoult-1236086468\/\">Nicholas Hoult<\/a> as Lex Luthor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCorenswet, who came up on Ryan Murphy shows such as <em>Hollywood <\/em>and <em>The Politician<\/em>, acknowledged that he sometimes did not feel like Superman on the set, but watching castmates\u2019 react to him told him all he needed to know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s like when you get a nice haircut, and you forget about it, but then you walk around and everybody\u2019s like, \u2018Whoa, you look great, for once!\u2019\u201d he said to laughs. \u201cI got to see other people see Superman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThat\u2019s something Brosnahan experienced first-hand. After spending a chunk of the shoot only interacting with Corenswet without the suit, she came across him in the costume for the first time. Turning to the actor on the screening room stage Monday, Brosnahan said: \u201cI just remember \u2026 walking through a field and following you with the suit on. I ran up to you and was like, \u2018You are fucking Superman! Crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA hero is only as interesting as their villain, and Hoult said the script from Gunn presented Lex Luthor he believes audiences may relate to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cEven though you perhaps don\u2019t agree with his process, there\u2019s an element where you can understand on some levels where he\u2019s coming from and why perhaps what he\u2019s pushing as his ideology is perhaps better for humanity,\u201d said Hoult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe trailer also gave  glimpses of the other superheroes in that world, including Nathan Fillion\u2019s Guy Gardner\/Green Lantern (dopey haircut and all), Isabela Merced\u2019s Hawkgirl and Edi Gathegi\u2019s Mr. Terrific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGunn is known for bringing beloved animals to the screen, such as Rocket Raccoon, who was the central figure in last year\u2019s <em>Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWith Krypto, he may have done it again, with a version that subverts the decades-long version seen in the comics and other media as a clean-cut canine with his chest out. This one looks more like a rescue than anything else. Of the trailer\u2019s canine scene-stealer, says Gunn: \u201cHe\u2019s not nearly the best dog.
