She, her son Glenn D. Martin II \u2014 a DJ who once performed at City Hall \u2014 and real estate investors Raizada Vaid and Mayank Dwivedi pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the moment Lewis-Martin became the second most senior person in City Hall, she abused her position and sold her influence to enrich herself and her family,\u201d prosecutors said in a court document. <\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Lewis-Martin \u2014 who <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nyc-mayor-eric-adams-aide-resigns-fdd0a399e1ed94c4a30c0a81798bba51\">resigned Sunday<\/a><\/span> \u2014 and her son raked in over $100,000 and got other help in exchange for her speeding approvals for construction projects.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis-Martin\u2019s lawyer said outside court that she simply helped a constituent cut through the Big Apple\u2019s thick red tape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat she was doing here was just moving things along,\u201d said the attorney, Arthur Aidala, calling the case \u201cridiculous.\u201d He said the $100,000 was for a legitimate business deal involving Lewis-Martin\u2019s son but didn\u2019t provide details. <\/p>\n<p>Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat facing his own federal bribery charges, is not a target of this investigation, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. But the indictment deals another blow to an administration already beset by overlapping scandals, including multiple pay-to-play allegations involving members of Adams\u2019 inner circle. <\/p>\n<p>Lewis-Martin, 63, has been one of the mayor\u2019s closest confidants, serving in senior roles as Adams ascended the ranks of government in New York over nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors wrote that Dwivedi, a hotelier with a background in finance, and Vaid, a developer who goes by \u201cPinky,\u201d repeatedly asked Lewis-Martin for help getting approvals for such projects as a rooftop bar and a hotel. She in turn pressed officials in the city\u2019s Department of Buildings to take action, which they did, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain and again, she delivered for them,\u201d Bragg said at a news conference, describing the alleged arrangement as \u201cnaked cronyism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In return, the developers paid $100,000 to Lewis-Martin\u2019s son, who put the money in an account he shared with her, prosecutors said in a court document. He used some of the money to buy a $113,000 Porsche last year, they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Teny Geragos, a lawyer for Dwivedi, said he \u201cdid nothing wrong. We look forward to setting the record straight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Martin II acted as \u201cintermediary\u201d for his mother, while receiving help from the businessmen with some of his own ventures, including a clothing line and an attempt to secure a Chick-fil-A franchise. <\/p>\n<p>Martin II, who performs under the stage name DJ Suave Luciano, doesn\u2019t appear to have prior food-service management experience, prosecutors said. According to the indictment, Martin II asked Vaid by phone for help handling application \u201cquestions about previous business history and stuff.\u201d Vaid responded that he would \u201cbe with you to take care of those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a text message, an attorney for Martin II, Michael Cibella, accused prosecutors of \u201ctwisting facts\u201d against his client, who he said had merely \u201cdeveloped a friendship with successful, hard working businessmen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The indictment goes on to describe Martin-Lewis discussing the franchise plan with an unidentified person and saying: \u201cYour sister has to be rich! I\u2019m gonna retire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether the franchise ever came through. A message seeking comment was sent to Chick-fil-A. <\/p>\n<p>Court documents recount Vaid sending Lewis-Martin text messages plainly asking for her to \u201ccall your source to approve application\u201d or to \u201cplease get this through,\u201d and her relaying those requests to a top buildings official. In one instance, a buildings department employee met with Vaid the next day, according to the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in December 2022, Lewis-Martin tried to cover her tracks by telling Vaid to make any \u201casks\u201d through Signal, an encrypted messaging app, prosecutors wrote. An attorney for Lewis-Martin declined to explain the directive but noted that many government officials use Signal.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the charges outlined Thursday, prosecutors said in court that Lewis-Martin is the subject of several ongoing investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors seized her phone and searched her home in September, after meeting her <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nyc-mayor-adams-investigations-f384ecdbf6a7b6664bd898e7ebce6e0f\">at an airport<\/a><\/span> as she got off a flight from Japan. The investigators also seized phones from a top city official overseeing a real estate deal and a broker involved in city leases, both of whom accompanied Lewis-Martin on the trip to Japan. <\/p>\n<p>She has said she\u2019s being \u201cfalsely accused\u201d and that she had \u201cnot made any arrangements in advance to take any gifts or money, or to have any gifts or money given to a family member or friend in order for me to do my job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors charged Adams in September with accepting luxury travel perks and illegal campaign contributions from a Turkish official and other foreign nationals looking to buy his influence. <\/p>\n<p>The mayor has pleaded not guilty to <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nyc-mayor-eric-adams-indictment-fbi-5aad135d1808cb9d049fccd74604e5d4\">charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and bribery<\/a><\/span>. Adams\u2019 federal trial is scheduled for April.<\/p>\n<p>His administration has been enveloped by a series of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-york-mayor-eric-adams-federal-prosecutors-2887c1f2e7097cb19b17a7d2659135bb\">investigations<\/a><\/span>, searches and seizures, leading to the resignations of his <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nypd-commissioner-resignation-federal-investigation-edward-caban-670388e653bc2d9bd19b7e7e9638e80d\">police commissioner<\/a><\/span>, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eric-adams-investigations-david-banks-nyc-schools-ba165a854c14f299f6bba830df9f46fd\">schools chancellor<\/a><\/span>, multiple <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-york-city-mayor-eric-adams-aide-eb8b63381e218419529b52eb8a1e0f04\">deputy mayors<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-york-city-mayor-philip-banks-resigns-28e5f5f6d442861804111c19e9b89f68\">his director of Asian affairs<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Bragg also is prosecuting a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-york-eric-adams-eric-ulrich-bribery-8a44e96f0782bb4945de117d69fba13f\">bribery conspiracy case<\/a><\/span> against former buildings commissioner Eric Ulrich, who has pleaded not guilty. No buildings department employees or officials have been charged in the alleged scheme involving Lewis-Martin. Her messages went to Ulrich\u2019s successor, and it\u2019s unclear whether anyone at the agency had any inkling of the alleged pay-to-play behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p>Douglas Muzzio, a retired political science professor and longtime commentator on New York politics, said the latest charges involving City Hall \u201cmight be the final shoe to drop\u201d in the public\u2019s perception of Adams\u2019 tenure.<\/p>\n<p>But he noted the mayor has been able to endure his own indictment.<\/p>\n<h2>___<\/h2>\n<p>This story has been corrected to remove an erroneous reference to a federal indictment.
