(Video: NASA\/SDO)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In October, the Sun reached a period of peak activity in an 11-year cycle known as the Solar Maximum, marked by recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-is-a-geomagnetic-storm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">geomagnetic storms<\/a> and near-global aurora light displays.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Solar Cycle 25 has been ongoing, and scientists with NOAA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/nasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a> have been tracking sunspots to determine and predict solar activity. The past two years marked the active phase of the solar cycle with a higher number of sunspots.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcfield.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Arcfield<\/a> chief scientist and space weather expert Geoff Crowley, this period of increased activity doesn&#8217;t just stop once the Solar Maximum is reached.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;We usually think of the solar maximum lasting for about a year,&#8221; Crowley said. &#8220;Throughout 2025, we&#8217;re going to see a lot of activity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\"><strong>Northern Lights dazzle during strongest solar storm in 21 years<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In May, millions of people who can&#8217;t normally see some of the most beautiful impacts of space weather were treated to a vibrant show of Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">On May 10, NOAA&#8217;s Space Weather Prediction Center said &#8220;extreme&#8221; Level 5 out of 5 geomagnetic storm conditions were observed for the first time in 21 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-image component-center\">\n<div class=\"m\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/288\/162\/fort-lauderdale.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1, https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/576\/324\/fort-lauderdale.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1 2x\" width=\"576\" height=\"324\"><source media=\"(min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 1023px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/720\/405\/fort-lauderdale.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1, https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/1440\/810\/fort-lauderdale.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1 2x\" width=\"1440\" height=\"810\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1024px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/668\/376\/fort-lauderdale.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1, https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/1336\/752\/fort-lauderdale.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1 2x\" width=\"1336\" height=\"752\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/images.foxweather.com\/static.foxweather.com\/www.foxweather.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/668\/376\/fort-lauderdale.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1\" alt=\"The Northern Lights were seen in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Friday night, May 10, 2024.\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/div>\n<div class=\"info\">\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p class=\"title\">The Northern Lights were seen in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Friday night, May 10, 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"><strong> (Luke Culver \/ FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The biggest space weather event of the year unfolded over several days, producing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/rare-severe-solar-storm-northern-lights-alabama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Lights as far south as Florida<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;A lot of people are still talking about that storm, trying to understand what happened and what the impacts were. So that was really, really huge,&#8221; Crowley said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In October, another severe geomagnetic storm produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/northern-lights-geomagnetic-storm-aurora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Northern Lights even down in the Southeast<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Crowley said it&#8217;s possible these solar storm events will continue for several years.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;It turns out that a lot of the major (solar) storms occur on the downside of the solar cycle,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I could imagine in the next two or three years, there&#8217;s going to be some major solar activity that we need to be aware of.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\"><strong>Increasing space weather impacts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The same powerful charged particles from the Sun responsible for beautiful dancing lights can negatively impact satellites, GPS, high-frequency radio, air <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> and the power grid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Crowley said that Earth&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/infrastructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infrastructure<\/a> and space satellites were largely spared from losses during the strongest geomagnetic storm in 20 years, with some exceptions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Some of the biggest impacts of space weather this year were the GPS systems used by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/extreme-solar-storms-disrupted-us-crop-planting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agricultural industry for planting<\/a>. The biggest solar storm of the year happened in May during the planting season for many crops.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;In some cases, there&#8217;s not even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/farm-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">farmer<\/a> sitting in the tractor. It&#8217;s all automated. And so during the storm, there was a loss of accuracy of GPS,&#8221; Crowley said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Farmers planted less corn and other crops during the May storm. During a major geomagnetic storm, satellite operators lose the ability to predict the satellite&#8217;s orbit or location.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;They were fortunate that there were no collisions because they really couldn&#8217;t predict whether collisions are going to happen very accurately,&#8221; Crowley said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">After launching a batch of Starlink satellites during a geomagnetic event in 2022 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/geomagnetic-storm-causes-destruction-of-40-new-starlink-satellites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">losing 40 satellites<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/space-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SpaceX<\/a> raised its orbit to prevent the drag from being so extreme that the satellite propulsion systems could not overcome it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Since the last extreme geomagnetic storm, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world<\/a> has become increasingly dependent on services that can be impacted by space weather.
