Some of these areas could go to 20-degrees above average to 30-degrees below average temperatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Winter&#8217;s grip will return to half of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a> this week as a rush of arctic air descends, plunging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-forecast\/current-temperature-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temperatures<\/a> from well above average to nearly 30 degrees below average for some.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Two areas of high pressure are responsible for this pattern change, driving the bitter cold south from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada<\/a> and into the eastern half of the U.S. This setup will sink temperatures nearly everywhere east of the Rocky Mountains and increase snow chances in the Northeast and Great Lakes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/cold-weather-safety-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>7 PS OF COLD WEATHER SAFETY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/January%20Cold%20Setup.png\"\/><fig-caption>Cold stretch set up.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/fig-caption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;We&#8217;re talking about a big, big cool down, to say the least, especially for places up and down the East Coast as we head into really the first few weeks of January,&#8221; FOX Weather Meteorologist Kendall Smith said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">After the ball drops for the new year, 2025&#8217;s arctic outbreak begins Wednesday and the cold will be here to stay by the first weekend of January.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The biggest changes will be in the northern Plains and eastern U.S., where high temperatures by mid-week will be between 20-30 degrees below what they were Monday.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/how-to-watch-fox-weather-on-tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/January%20Forecast%20Lows.png\"\/><fig-caption>Temperature forecast for Sunday.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/fig-caption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">North <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florida<\/a> could see temperatures around freezing with overnight lows for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/florida\/jacksonville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jacksonville<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/florida\/tallahassee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tallahassee<\/a> hovering around 30 degrees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">For the north, this change in weather pattern brings the first ingredient needed for snow.
