July 25, 2024.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><strong>MARSA ALAM, Egypt <\/strong>\u2013 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/shark-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shark attack<\/a> in Egypt&#8217;s Red Sea near a popular tourist destination has left a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/europe\">European Union<\/a> official dead and another injured, according to local media and state officials.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Egypt&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EGY.Environment\/posts\/pfbid0svxuH4SP55DPSuyGmxtj6NGhcVJE5zSyzgEv5mdojevzUwquUCBVqK5Cw1HHzeyBl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ministry of Environment<\/a> said the attack happened Sunday morning in deep water outside the swimming area in the northern region of Marsa Alam, a coastal town known for its sandy beaches and coral reefs.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Gianluca Di Gioia, 48, from Rome, was killed by a tiger shark while his friend, identified as 69-year-old Peppino Fappani, tried to stop the attack, Italian news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/ansabrasil.com.br\/english\/news\/general_news\/2024\/12\/30\/tiger-shark-killed-italian-tourist-says-egypt_7758f977-7649-4c51-8a88-b122a1c25737.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ANSA<\/a> reported. The attack happened while the two men were scuba diving to explore a coral reef. Di Gioia worked at the European Commission&#8217;s research center and had been working since 2012 at the European External Action Service (EEAS), the diplomatic service of the EU.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The area where the attack occurred has been closed to swimming until Wednesday as a precautionary measure, Minister of the Environment Dr. Yasmine Fouad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EGY.Environment\/posts\/pfbid0svxuH4SP55DPSuyGmxtj6NGhcVJE5zSyzgEv5mdojevzUwquUCBVqK5Cw1HHzeyBl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement online<\/a>. An urgent committee has been formed to investigate the causes of the attack.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Shark attacks, while rare, have occurred previously along the Egyptian Red Sea coast.
