Warning boxes are color coded as: Snow Squall Warnings in purple.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">More than 60 million residents were placed under winter weather alerts, including Winter Storm Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings, with major impacts expected between Interstates 50 and 70.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">NOAA forecasters and the FOX Weather Center said travel will likely be impossible for some communities, as more than a foot of snow will bury some roadways despite efforts to pretreat pavement before the wintry weather.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Wide_Winter_Alerts.png?v1\"\/><figcaption>Current Winter Weather Alerts<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">South of the heavy band of snow, ice is expected to be problematic and could accumulate to nearly an inch from southern Missouri through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/kentucky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kentucky<\/a> and into West Virginia. The heavy glaze will likely lead to power outages, and due to the nature of the terrain, outages could last for an extended period.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Arctic air following the wintry weather will keep a large part of the northern tier of the country below freezing for several days, causing additional hardships for those unprepared for the winter wallop.<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">Greatest Snowfall Event of the Season<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Snowfall totals are expected to approach a foot for communities in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio<\/a> and parts of West Virginia\u2014making this winter blast the most significant event of the season, and for some areas, perhaps the largest snowfall in over a decade, according to NOAA&#8217;s Weather Prediction Center.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Wide%20Snow%20QPF.png\"\/><figcaption>Snowfall forecast<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Isolated higher amounts are expected in the Appalachians and along the Great Lakes, where the terrain&#8217;s influence will be in full effect.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Many towns and cities in the path of the storm system have issued snow emergencies, as crews treat major roadways and prepare for round-the-clock snow removal efforts.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;This is the big one,&#8221; Chief Safety and Operations Officer Becky Allmeroth, with the Missouri Department of Transportation, told FOX Weather on Friday. &#8220;We are messaging out ahead of time, letting motorists know that our travel is going to be just about impossible on some of our major interstates: Interstate 70, because of the volume of snow, and Interstate 44 \u2014 that\u2019s really the prime bull\u2019s-eye right now for some of those heavier amounts of ice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Heavy snows of 5-8 inches are expected across the metro areas of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/missouri\/kansas-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kansas City<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/missouri\/st-louis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Louis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/kentucky\/louisville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louisville<\/a>, with even higher amounts possible around Indianapolis. The snowfall is even expected to reach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/pennsylvania\/philadelphia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philadelphia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/washington-dc\/washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>, where 3-6 inches are possible through Monday evening, with higher isolated amounts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/how-much-ice-storm-accumulations-are-needed-to-knock-out-power-damage-trees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>HOW MUCH ICE IS NEEDED TO KNOCK OUT POWER, DAMAGE TREES?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">Significant Amounts of Ice Could Knock Out Power<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">South of the heavy snowfall, an ice storm looks likely, with hours of freezing rain expected, the FOX Forecast Center said.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Wide%20Ice%20QPF.png\"\/><figcaption>Ice forecast<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Ice totals of at least half an inch could accumulate in parts of southern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/missouri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Missouri<\/a>, southern Illinois, and into the Appalachians, leading to widespread tree damage and long-lasting power outages.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Wide%20Power%20Outage%20Forecast.png?v3%22\"\/><figcaption>Power outage potential<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Travel is strongly discouraged. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Prepare for possible power outages,&#8221; an NWS meteorologist warned residents in the zone with the highest possibility of ice.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The impacts of ice accretion depend largely on the amount of ice that piles upon surfaces.
