Florida Coral Rescue Center biologist Justin Zimmerman explains why coral reefs are important to Florida&#8217;s economy and how they protect the coastline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Marine scientists tracked coral colonies in a remote area of the Great Barrier Reef and found that corals previously more resilient to bleaching suffered devastating and fatal bleaching during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia<\/a>\u2019s 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/world-greatest-coral-bleaching-event-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the fourth-ever global bleaching event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Last year, NOAA declared the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/global-coral-bleaching-noaa-confirms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>fourth-ever global coral bleaching event was underway<\/u><\/a>. Worldwide bleaching is happening because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">historically<\/a> high sea-surface temperatures. Depending on the species of coral, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/ocean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ocean<\/a> temperatures between 2 and 3 degrees above average is all it takes for heat stress to begin to take its toll and begin bleaching.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Previous studies found that the Great Barrier Reef <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/great-barrier-reef-hottest-ocean-temps-400-years-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experienced its hottest temperatures in 400 years<\/a> during the 2024 global bleaching event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/lol2.10456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new study<\/a> published this month by researchers at the University of Sydney studied individual colonies in One Tree Reef, located 62 miles (100 km) offshore in the Great Barrier Reef. The area has been protected from tourism and other activities for 50 years. (B) The locations where tracking of individual coral colonies was done, the Gutter (G) and Shark Alley (SA) are located adjacent to One Tree Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"><strong> (University of Sydney\u00a0)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Our observations on initial responses to an intense marine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/heat-wave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heatwave<\/a> show rapid bleaching, disease onset, and mortality in diverse corals, including genera that are considered resilient,&#8221; the study authors wrote. &#8220;This information is essential to predict how the species composition of coral reef ecosystems will change in a warming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/record-breaking-mega-coral-visible-from-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RECORD-BREAKING MEGA CORAL VISIBLE FROM SPACE IS POSSIBLY 300 YEARS OLD<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Between February and April, 66% of the 460 colonies researchers tracked were bleaching. By July, 53% of the bleached colonies were dead and 16% recovered, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The study also found that dying colonies can quickly turn from a &#8220;reef to rubble&#8221; under reoccurring marine heatwave conditions. The authors note that coral skeleton collapse can take months to years, depending on the location.
