The capital area was the benefactor of improved weather over the last couple of days with high temperatures reaching the 60s, which helped break up the ice that had formed along the Potomac River.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><strong>WASHINGTON &#8211; <\/strong>One of the largest search and rescue operations involving a downed aircraft around the nation\u2019s capital since Sept. 11, 2001, unfolded Wednesday evening, as hundreds of first responders descended on the Potomac River.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The Federal Aviation Administration reported that American Airlines Flight 5342, operated by PSA Airlines, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/kansas\/wichita\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wichita, Kansas<\/a>, collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Reagan Washington National Airport.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and other partner agencies conducted search and rescue efforts well into the evening for the dozens of souls in the chilly waters of the Potomac River.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">All aviation traffic into and out of Washington\u2019s Reagan National Airport was halted as authorities swarmed the airport and nearby waterways after the collision.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;There were 60 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft\u2026Our concern is for the passengers and crew on board the aircraft. However, water temperatures were still chilly, estimated to be in the 40s, which caused concern over hypothermia.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/coast-guard-warns-about-the-deadly-truths-of-winter-boating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Coast Guard says<\/a> extended exposure to water that is even around 70 degrees can lead to exhaustion and unconsciousness.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The USGS says once a body\u2019s temperature reaches 95 degrees, a person\u2019s agility and self-rescue abilities become virtually non-existent, which is why people who fall into cold waters can die within minutes.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Once search and rescue operations conclude, the National Transportation Safety Board will be tasked with gathering data from witnesses and black boxes in an effort to determine what went wrong.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/buddy-holly-plane-crash-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WHAT CAUSED BUDDY HOLLY\u2019S PLANE TO CRASH 65 YEARS AGO<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">As part of the investigation, federal authorities will examine the weather to determine if winds, visibility or other factors played a role in the tragedy.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">A nearby weather observation site reported fair skies and a visibility of around 10 miles at the time of Wednesday\u2019s incident.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Several previous air disasters around the nation\u2019s capital, outside of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, involved weather in some fashion.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In 1947, Eastern Air Lines Flight 854 crashed during its approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/washington-dc\/washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington<\/a> National Airport due in part to poor weather conditions and pilot error.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">And in 1982, 78 people were killed when Air Florida Flight 90 crashed shortly after takeoff from Washington National Airport in wintry conditions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/american-airlines-plane-crash-black-hawk\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Multiple federal agencies are investigating a major aviation crash that happened between a regional jet and a helicopter around Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday.
