Hainaut et al.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The ESA\u2019s Planetary Defense Office and NASA\u2019s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies estimate the probability that asteroid 2024 YR4 will hit is 1.2%.<br \/>&#8220;Currently, no other known large asteroids have an impact probability above 1%,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/planetarydefense\/2025\/01\/29\/nasa-shares-observations-of-recently-identified-near-earth-asteroid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA wrote in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">As of Jan. 29, the asteroid is level 3 out of 10 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/torino-scale-asteroid-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Torino Impact Hazard scale.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;There have been several objects in the past that have risen on the risk list and eventually dropped off as more data have come in. New observations may result in reassignment of this asteroid to 0 as more data come in,&#8221; NASA said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">This is the second-highest alert for an asteroid since 2004&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/nasa-spacecraft-new-mission-asteroid-apophis-near-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asteroid Apophis<\/a> initially caused a big scare, briefly warranting a level 4 on the Torino scale, before more observations confirmed the asteroid would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">safely<\/a> pass Earth in 2029.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/asteroid-breaks-up-over-philippines-asteroid-threats-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ASTEROID BREAKS UP OVER PHILIPPINES HOURS AFTER DETECTION SERVING AS REMINDER OF BIGGER THREATS TO EARTH<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;It therefore meets all of the criteria necessary to activate the two UN-endorsed asteroid reaction groups: the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) and the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group (SMPAG),&#8221; the ESA wrote.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">These two international groups are coordinating more observations and will update their risk to Earth.<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">Watching 2024 YR4 before it disappears from view<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/astronomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Astronomers<\/a> said the asteroid is moving away from Earth in an elongated orbit around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/sun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sun<\/a>, making it difficult to study its trajectory and orbit.
