<\/strong>\u2013<strong> <\/strong>The FOX Forecast Center is monitoring the development of a powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/how-do-winter-storms-form\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter storm<\/a> that has tens of millions of people across at least 22 states from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/midwest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Midwest<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/northeast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northeast<\/a> on alert for a widespread threat of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/from-ice-accretion-to-supercooled-water-7-things-to-know-about-freezing-rain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freezing rain<\/a> that has already led to rel=\"noopener\">Missouri<\/a>, with officials saying there have been multiple reports of stalled vehicles and crashes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/kansas\/topeka\" data-v-438398f6=\"\">Officials say the biggest impacts have been seen on busy highways such as Interstate 35, Interstate 70 and Interstate 435.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a strength, impacts will begin to be seen from the mid-Mississippi Valley on Wednesday and then into the Great Lakes region by Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Because of this, the Thursday morning commute is expected to be extremely dangerous on untreated roads and highways\u00a0in cities like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/illinois\/chicago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Chicago<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/indiana\/fort-wayne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Fort Wayne<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/indiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Indiana<\/u><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/ohio\/columbus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Columbus<\/u><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/ohio\/cleveland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Cleveland<\/u><\/a> in <a Weather<\/a> Advisories have been issued across the region and include major cities like Kansas City, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/iowa\/des-moines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Des Moines<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/iowa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iowa<\/a>, and Chicago.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The FOX Forecast Center said that dangerous travel conditions appear to be the biggest impact of this storm in those locations. That\u2019s because forecasters believe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/how-measure-ice-accretion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ice accretions<\/a> across the Midwest should remain low enough that only scattered power outages could occur.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Temperatures are expected to climb above freezing during the day on Thursday, quickly melting any ice that built up during the storm. However, refreezing will be a concern as we get into Thursday night.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/PA%20WSSI%20Winter%20Weather.png\"\/><figcaption>This graphic shows the possible ice imacts over the next three days.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Areas to the east will see the highest potential for significant icing \u2013 especially in portions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/maryland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland<\/a> and into the Laurel Highlands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pennsylvania<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Power outages and tree damage are most likely in those locations, as ice accretions greater than a quarter-inch and maybe as high as a half-inch are possible.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/East%20Winter%20Alerts.png\"\/><figcaption>This graphic shows the winter weather alerts in effect in the Northeast and New England.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Winter weather alerts have also been issued across the region, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-is-an-ice-storm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ice Storm Warnings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Ice Storm Warnings have been issued in four states, with the National Weather Service office in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/west-virginia\/charleston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charleston<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/west-virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Virginia<\/a>, issuing its first Ice Storm Warning in three years.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Travel is strongly discouraged,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/showsigwx.php?warnzone=WVZ523&amp;warncounty=WVC075&amp;firewxzone=WVZ523&amp;local_place1=2%20Miles%20ESE%20Slatyfork%20WV&amp;product1=Ice+Storm+Warning&amp;lat=38.3886&amp;lon=-80.0672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">forecasters warned<\/a>. &#8220;If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/prepare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prepare<\/a> for power outages.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Feb%205-6%20Storm%20Daypart%20THU%20AM.png\"\/><figcaption>This graphic shows the forecast on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Outside that region, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/from-ice-accretion-to-supercooled-water-7-things-to-know-about-freezing-rain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freezing rain<\/a> is expected to fall along the busy Interstate 95 corridor from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/washington-dc\/washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington<\/a> up through southern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/new-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The FOX Forecast Center said that from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/new-york-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>New York City<\/u><\/a> area northward, the cold air will be deep enough that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/snow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snow<\/a> will be a concern during the onset of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/winter-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>winter weather<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Cities like New York City, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/connecticut\/hartford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Hartford<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/connecticut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Connecticut<\/u><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/massachusetts\/boston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Boston<\/u><\/a> could see snow fall during the middle of the Thursday morning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/commuter-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">That could wreak havoc on the roads, but the FOX Forecast Center said that much like in the Midwest, warm air will move in, changing the snow to either freezing rain or plain rain.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Any snow left behind will nearly completely melt.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Northeast%20Snow%20QPF.png\"\/><figcaption>This graphic shows the forecast snow totals in the Northeast and New England through Thursday, Jan. 6, 2025.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">But farther to the north across northern New England, the snow will continue through the day on Thursday and may not change over north of Interstate 90.
