Alexander Handwerger, a JPL landslide scientist who performed the analysis, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to the U.S. Geological Survey, landslides are considered to be a type of &#8220;mass wasting,&#8221; (Genaro Molina\/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images)<br \/>\n        <span>(Genaro Molina\/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Landslides are typically initiated by rainfall, snowmelt, erosion, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and human activity.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In the West, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/oregon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oregon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington<\/a>, California and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/idaho\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Idaho<\/a> have the greatest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/landslide-vulnerable-counties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vulnerabilities from landslides<\/a>, which cause billions of dollars in damage each year.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The Insurance Information Institute reminds homeowners that, similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/earthquakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earthquakes<\/a>, damage from landslides is excluded from standard insurance policies.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/7-facts-about-earthquakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>7 FACTS ABOUT EARTHQUAKES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">As part of the response to the unfolding situation, the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the California Governor\u2019s Office of Emergency Services <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rpvca.gov\/1707\/Land-Movement-Updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced a $42 million buyout program for property owners in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;While JPL\u2019s radar imagery strongly visualizes this dramatic acceleration and expansion of the landslide area during September and October 2024, the city would note that the landslide has decelerated since October due to the drier weather conditions and the city\u2019s installation of highly productive deep dewatering wells,&#8221;
