These areas of less dense solar material are more open, allowing solar wind to stream out at higher speeds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Coronal holes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/sun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sun<\/a> continue to send solar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/wind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wind<\/a> toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>, increasing the chances of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/7-fun-facts-about-the-northern-lights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Lights<\/a> across the northern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a> this week, according to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/space-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">space weather<\/a> forecast.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">NOAA&#8217;s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has been tracking influences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/giant-hole-sun-coronal-hole-solar-storms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from two coronal holes in the Sun<\/a> for several weeks now. Under these conditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/strong-geomagnetic-storm-new-year-2025-northern-lights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aurora lights<\/a> could be visible across the northern tier and Upper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/midwest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Midwest<\/a> on Sunday night and early Monday morning in places like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/michigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/maine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-video video-ct\">\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"info\">\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p class=\"sub-text\">FILE: After a bevy of solar activity, the new year started with a dazzling display of Aurora lights, with Alaska seeing most of the action (Video Credit: Ricky Burns\/X).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">While the public does not need to be concerned about space weather impacts, CH HSS and the more common coronal mass ejections (CME) from the Sun can negatively affect satellites in low-Earth orbit and the power grid. This week&#8217;s conditions are only expected to cause weak power grid fluctuations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\"><strong>Coming this spring: Increasing space weather prediction capability\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The latest space weather comes as NOAA works to bring its newest space weather forecasting tool online.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The GOES-19 satellite is the first in the GOES series to have a compact coronagraph, which obtains images of the corona, the outermost part of the Sun&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/atmosphere\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">atmosphere<\/a>, every 15 minutes.
