ESA <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.esa.int\/rocketscience\/2025\/02\/04\/asteroid-2024-yr4-latest-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updates its website<\/a> once a day, and on Tuesday, the chances are at 2.8% that the asteroid will hit in 2032. <a href=\"https:\/\/cneos.jpl.nasa.gov\/sentry\/details.html#?des=2024%20YR4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA&#8217;s Earth Impact Risk Summary<\/a> puts the odds at just over 3%. NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/james-webb-telescope-studying-asteroid-yr4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> will use its Mid-InfaRed Instrument (MIRI) to study the thermal energy from Asteroid 2024 YR4, which is another data point in figuring out how the size of the asteroid.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/what-would-happen-asteroid-2024-yr4-hit-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ASTEROID 2024 YR4 IS UNLIKELY TO HIT EARTH, BUT HERE\u2019S WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF IT DID<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The asteroid\u2019s size is very important, as the ESA points out: &#8220;The hazard represented by a 40-meter (130-foot) asteroid is very different from that of a 90-meter (300-foot) asteroid.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Because of its orbit, the asteroid will fade from Earth\u2019s view over the next few months and won&#8217;t become visible again until 2028. Hainaut et al.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Kareta said that the full Moon this past week has limited observations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;The sky background is higher and thus finding small and faint objects is significantly tougher \u2013 \u00a0but the Nordic Optical Telescope in La Palma and the Magdalena Ridge Observatory in New Mexico have started reporting positions again as we&#8217;re moving away from the full Moon,&#8221; Kareta said. &#8220;Lowell&#8217;s big telescope, the Lowell Discovery Telescope, is similarly starting up again about now. As the object gets fainter and fainter, only bigger and bigger telescopes will be able to detect it from the ground.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">If you don\u2019t think this asteroid is getting enough attention, you can see a list of all the telescope observations since its discovery on the International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minorplanetcenter.net\/db_search\/show_object?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;object_id=2024+YR4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Astronomical Union\u2019s Minor Planet Center website<\/a>. Nearly 400 observations have been recorded since late December.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Asteroid 2024 YR4 was discovered on Dec. 27 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in R\u00edo Hurtado, Chile.
