Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced that state offices would be closed on Wednesday due to the winter weather, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/nasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a>\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/alabama\/huntsville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Huntsville<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/alabama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alabama<\/a>, said it would be opening late because of the conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Similar announcements were made in Tennessee, where Gov. Bill Lee announced that state offices in the West and Middle Grand divisions would remain closed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/kentucky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kentucky<\/a> Gov. This video shows the dangerous driving conditions in Daviess County because of the winter weather.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;If you can&#8217;t turn your heat on by (Tuesday) afternoon, you need to call a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">family<\/a> member or friend to go stay with them,&#8221; Beshear said. &#8220;If that option isn&#8217;t available, please go to an emergency shelter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Thousands of Department of Highways crews have been working tirelessly to remove mud and debris from hundreds of roads because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/flood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flooding<\/a>. Now, to add insult to injury, those same crews have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/prepare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preparing<\/a> for the onslaught of winter weather.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Beshear said snowplows and salt trucks were working to keep state highways passable but warned that the incoming extreme cold would make it difficult for them as salt and other anti-icing agents become less effective.<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">Dangerous snow, ice target mid-Atlantic<\/h2>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Mid%20Atlantic%20Winter%20Alerts.png\"\/><figcaption>This graphic shows active winter weather alerts in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The mid-Atlantic is the next target for the winter storm as it continues to barrel out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio<\/a> Valley and into the Appalachians.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The FOX Forecast Center said that after a &#8220;break&#8221; in the intensity of the snow in the central Appalachians, renewed heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/precipitation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">precipitation<\/a> will develop later Wednesday morning, especially across southeastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia<\/a> and northeastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/north-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Carolina<\/a>, as a secondary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/why-is-atmospheric-pressure-so-important-to-the-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low-pressure system<\/a> develops off the East Coast.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Due to the winter weather threat, the governor of North Carolina declared a state of emergency and prepared residents for treacherous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> conditions and power outages.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Mid%20Atlantic%20Snow%20QPF.png\"\/><figcaption>This graphic shows the forecast snow totals in the mid-Atlantic.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Snow and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/from-ice-accretion-to-supercooled-water-7-things-to-know-about-freezing-rain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freezing rain<\/a> will spread across the region through Wednesday morning, and some strong, quick bursts of snow will cover parts of Virginia.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Starting Wednesday afternoon and into the evening, the heaviest snow will fall across the mid-Atlantic, especially in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia and far northeastern North Carolina.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/VA%20Beach%20Norfolk%20Metro%20Snow%20QPF.png\"\/><figcaption>This graphic shows the forecast snow totals in the Norfolk, Virginia, area.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The biggest snowstorm of the season so far in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/virginia\/richmond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richmond<\/a>, Virginia, area was reported on Jan. 5-6, when about 6 inches of snow fell.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The FOX Forecast Center said there is a good chance that this storm could eclipse that threshold.
