Miller, who studied them in the 1940s, and they share several key similarities.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">These powerful storm systems impact the Eastern Seaboard during the fall and winter, bringing gusty winds, heavy precipitation and coastal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/flood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flooding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured the precipitation can fall in frozen form, giving rise to terms such as &#8220;snowmageddon&#8221; and &#8220;snowpocalypse&#8221; to describe these intense events.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">During more significant episodes, airports along the Eastern Seaboard have been shut down, and the combination of extreme weather impacts has led to billions of dollars in damages.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-is-noreaster-definition-northeast-snowstorm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WHAT IS A NOR\u2019EASTER?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">What is a Miller Type D nor\u2019easter and who does it impact?<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Unlike most other types of nor\u2019easters, Miller Type D events most often occur during an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/el-nino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Ni\u00f1o<\/a> cycle.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The warm cycle of the El Ni\u00f1o Southern Oscillation is known to increase the activity of the southern tropical jet, which aids in moisture and storm development.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">During a Type D setup, the northern jet is usually well far displaced from the storm system, with the greatest typical snowfall occurring from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/georgia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia<\/a> mountains, through eastern Tennessee, the Carolinas, through Virginia and the Delmarva Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Unlike other types of nor\u2019easters, this event only involves one area of low pressure, which begins in the western Gulf and slowly organizes and traverses Florida into the southwest Atlantic, the main area of the low pressure stays well offshore, limiting impacts from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/northeast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northeast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Due to the system\u2019s track, severe weather is not a major factor except in the southern parts of the Sunshine State, where the limited warm side of the storm system exists.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Beaches from Georgia through the Carolinas and Virginia usually take a beating due to the significant counterclockwise flow around the intensifying area of low pressure.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/does-water-rainfall-smell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WHAT DOES RAIN SMELL LIKE?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">Historical examples of Miller Type D nor\u2019easters<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><strong>Feb. 17-18, 1989: Southeast snowstorm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">A quickly-moving area of low pressure caught parts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/mid-atlantic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mid-Atlantic<\/a> off-guard in mid-February 1989 with blizzard conditions in Virginia and a foot of snow as far south as North Carolina\u2019s Triad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/pub\/data\/swdi\/stormevents\/pub-pdf\/storm_1987_01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to National Weather Service records<\/a>, the Norfolk, Virginia, area saw its snowiest day with some 13.6 inches of snow over the coastal community.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Coastal communities from North Carolina southward only experienced precipitation in the liquid variety but saw wind gusts of 40-60 mph.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">During the winter of 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/virginia\/norfolk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norfolk<\/a> received an eye-popping 10.2 inches of snow, but according to meteorologists, the event resembled a Miller Type A storm because of the origin of areas of low pressure.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The Hampton Roads area typically only sees around half a foot of snow spread out over a four-month period, making the heavy snowfall events associated with nor\u2019easters a rare occurrence.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-image component-center\">\n<div along the East Coast in 1987.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The Miller Type D nor\u2019easter occurred when the Super Bowl was being held in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/california\/pasadena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pasadena, California<\/a>, hence the name &#8220;Super Bowl snowstorm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Snowfall stretched from the Tennessee Valley through southern New England, but the Virginia, D.C. and Delmarva areas were hit particularly hard.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured
