Rubin Observatory&#8217;s on-sky commissioning from the night of October 27, 2024 using the 144-megapixel test camera, called the Commissioning Camera (ComCam).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><strong>CERRO PACHON, Chile &#8211; <\/strong>Driving up the mountain road to reach the U.S. National Science Foundation\u2019s newest observatory in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/south-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chile<\/a>, which will begin observations later this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/astronomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">astronomer<\/a> Beth Willman was delighted to see a sign.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;It says \u2018Vera C. Rubin Observatory this way,\u2019 and it was a simple but powerful moment for me to realize it was really there,&#8221; Willman said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">A quick internet search will reveal why having a woman\u2019s name on a $571 million science facility is a milestone. There are no others like it, and no one like Rubin.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;In the back of my head, I had wanted the National Lab to be named after Vera Rubin because of her incredible leadership and legacy. And I was thrilled to hear that work was already ongoing to name what is now the Vera C. In March, the LSST was installed at the mountaintop observatory in Chile, and the facility has entered the final stages of testing before operations begin in the coming months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\"><strong>A \u2018brilliant woman\u2019 breaking scientific barriers\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The U.S. Department of Energy and National Science Foundation-funded facility, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, is named after the astronomer credited with the first evidence of dark matter.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Many in the scientific community still believe she was overlooked for the Nobel Prize. Right: Rubin analyzing the spectra of stars at the Carnegie Institution in the 1970s, work which led her to confirm dark matter&#8217;s existence.<\/p>\n<p> <!----><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Rubin\u2019s work in the 1970s led to the first evidence that the universe has something we still don\u2019t know what it is, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/european-space-telescope-launching-from-florida-will-study-dark-matter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dark matter<\/a>. Fifty years later, scientists know about 80% of the universe is made of dark matter.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;She did that by pioneering studies of galaxies. I don&#8217;t know what I expected. I expected some, you know, superhero swashbuckling stories. She was just a humble and powerful and brilliant woman, very practical and down to Earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">All four of Rubin&#8217;s children went on to be scientists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/science-matters\/nsf-doe-rubin-observatory-will-capture-unseen-cosmos-dark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her son, Allan Rubin told the NSF<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The world will soon hear Vera Rubin&#8217;s name a lot more for a few reasons. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/american-women-quarters-2025-rolls-and-bags-dr-vera-rubin-MASTER_AWQVR.html?srsltid=AfmBOorE08X7aO6yj8TiWsYrwZA5eBvg1Og4fRgmuiXLPshZ9sJHt4s4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Her face will be on a new quarter<\/a> released this June, right around the time Rubin Observatory plans to release the first images.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In the decades to come, budding scientists will credit discoveries and new findings to the Vera C.
