Other debris from the wreckage, such as mattresses and a sink, were also found on the ocean floor.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">It is important to note that the boot is not human remains and the ship was empty when sunk. Some equipment had been removed from the ship upon its decommissioning, but most of the sailor&#8217;s items such as bunk mattresses, sinks, paint cans, filing cabinets, and spare equipment\u00a0like the boot remained on board, according to NOAA.<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">USS Nevada had a storied history in US Navy<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Constructed in 1912 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/massachusetts\/quincy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quincy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/massachusetts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Massachusetts<\/a>, and officially commissioned for warfare in 1916, the ship operated during World War I to protect convoys carrying material from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a> to Great Britain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Feature-Stories\/Story\/Article\/3879225\/uss-nevada-was-the-only-battleship-to-get-underway-during-pearl-harbor-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the U.S. Department of Defense<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The USS Nevada was the only ship to get underway during the Pearl Harbor attacks on Dec. 7, 1941.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">At the start of the fight, the USS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/nevada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nevada<\/a> was struck by a torpedo and began to take on water. As a result, two sailors from Nevada were awarded the Medal of Honor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Of the USS Nevada&#8217;s crew of around 1,500, 76 sailors and marines were killed or injured during the attack. Nine men are still unaccounted for.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The Nevada was salvaged and repaired to re-enter combat. It was assigned as a target for atomic bomb testing at the Marshal Islands, according to Naval History and Heritage Command.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The tests left the ship damaged and radioactive, which led to the official decommissioning of the vessel.
