may have many wondering why the weather has been stuck, as if the forecast has been on repeat.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The answer, according to meteorologists, lies in the weather patterns, which have produced prolonged periods of severe weather.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Ridges of high pressure, currently generally centered over the eastern U.S., have, in essence, trapped storm systems over the heartland, preventing them from moving eastward.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-image component-center\">\n<div class=\"m\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" leading to heavy rainfall and severe weather in cities such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/ohio\/cincinnati\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cincinnati<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/kentucky\/louisville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louisville<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/missouir\/st-louis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Louis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/tennessee\/memphis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Memphis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Essentially, the region has been dealing with a stationary frontal boundary and areas of low pressure that are either slow-moving or stuck over the region, leading to storms training over the same areas and an amplified flood risk.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/lake-city-arkansas-tornado-april-2-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WATCH: VIOLENT TORNADO CAUSES DAMAGE NEAR LAKE CITY, ARKANSAS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">And the severe weather has certainly made its mark. According to the FOX Weather Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/lake-city-arkansas-tornado-april-2-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 600 severe weather alerts were issued from Wednesday into Thursday<\/a>, the most since 2012.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">While the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/tornadoes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tornadoes<\/a>, hail, and damaging wind events is only slightly above average for the time of year, the issue has been the sheer scale of the impacts, with flooding href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/flood-threat-mississippi-valley-wednesday-thursday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many areas will have received over a foot of rainfall<\/a>, leading to saturated soils.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">River levels, however, commonly lag behind rainfall totals, meaning that the full extent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/flood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flooding<\/a> will not be immediately known for days after the rainfall ends.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to NOAA water-level sensors, only two river gauges in the U.S. are currently at major flood stage, with that number expected to jump to 38 over the next few days.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The same can be said for river levels at minor or moderate stages, with a significant jump expected in the short to medium term.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/severe-storm-threat-tornado-outbreak-high-risk-forecast-april-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>DEADLY TORNADO OUTBREAK PUMMELS MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AS STATES OF EMERGENCY DECLARED<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">End of current stagnant pattern in sight<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The pattern of stormy weather is not expected to last forever, as widespread weather patterns typically last anywhere from a few days to under two weeks.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">High-pressure ridges along the Eastern Seaboard, which have kept the storm systems locked in place, are finally expected to weaken toward the end of the weekend and into next week.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">This shift will allow drier, less humid air to percolate, bringing an end to the wet and humid weather that has plagued the region.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/tornado-shelter-construction-shift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ATTITUDES TOWARD TORNADO PREPAREDNESS IN US CHANGING AS STORM RISK ZONES SHIFT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">While the prospect of drier weather is welcome, the floodwaters will not recede quickly.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">River levels will remain high for the foreseeable future, and if a wet weather pattern returns, any additional rainfall could be especially serious.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Interestingly, the Ohio Valley region was one of only a few across the country expected to see above-average precipitation during the spring.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">This is occurring while the mid-Atlantic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florida<\/a> and the desert Southwest are grappling with drought conditions and record heat.<\/p>\n<div
