(Video courtesy: NASA)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/nasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a>&#8216;s powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/the-james-webb-space-telescope-jwst-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> (JWST), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/astronomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">astronomers<\/a> have found the best evidence yet of life on another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world<\/a> outside our solar system.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">For years, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/webb-signs-of-life-exoplanet-nasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exoplanet K2-18b<\/a> has been a top contender with promising signs of life. New research led by the University of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cambridge<\/a> has found evidence of chemicals within K2-18b&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/atmosphere\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">atmosphere<\/a> that on Earth are produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/ocean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marine<\/a> life, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/pseudo-nitzschia-neurotoxin-domoic-acid-california-beaches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">algae<\/a> and phytoplankton.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">K2-18b orbits its parent star within the constellation Leo, 124 light years away, and is more than 2.5 times larger than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>. This world is known as a &#8220;Hycean&#8221; planet because it could contain an ocean underworld teeming with life and a hydrogen-rich atmosphere.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/nasa-scientists-discover-earth-sized-planet-exoplanet-toi-700-e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NASA SCIENTIST DISCOVERS EARTH-SIZED \u2018HABITABLE ZONE\u2019 WORLD JUST 100 LIGHT-YEARS AWAY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Previous observations have found methane and carbon dioxide in the exoplanet\u2019s atmosphere, with hints of other promising signatures, but this new research confirms a &#8220;chemical fingerprint&#8221; of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and\/or dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). Madhusudhan (Cambridge University) \/ NASA)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;We didn\u2019t know for sure whether the signal we saw last time was due to DMS, but just the hint of it was exciting enough for us to have another look with JWST using a different instrument,&#8221; said\u00a0Professor Nikku Madhusudhan,\u00a0of Cambridge\u2019s Institute of Astronomy, who led the research.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Earlier research used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/james-webb-space-telescope-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JWST\u2019s NIRISS<\/a> (Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph) and NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph) instruments. Given everything we know about this planet, a Hycean world with an ocean that is teeming with life is the scenario that best fits the data we have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/how-to-watch-fox-weather-on-tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The researchers say this could be a &#8220;tipping point&#8221; to answering the biggest question in planetary science: Are we alone?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">As with all things in science, these exciting findings have produced more questions, including what processes are producing the chemical signatures on the exoplanet.
