Helene expected to bring catastrophic winds, storm surges to northeastern Gulf Coast
The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking team continues to monitor Hurricane Helene as it moves northward over the Gulf of Mexico.
As of 11 p.m. Wednesday, Helene is producing sustained winds of 85 mph and is forecast to become a major hurricane by Thursday morning.
For now, the storm’s forward motion is to the north at 9 mph. This is slightly slower in forward speed as compared to earlier on Wednesday.
