EF1 touches down in Granville County between Oxford and Henderson


A viewer named Terry Watson shared a picture with WRAL News of a tornado on Friday in Granville County.

Another viewer named Kathy Hudson shared a video of the apparent tornado on Friday as it appeared to cross Interstate 85 near Oxford. The area is near Vance-Granville Community College.

“We pulled over to the side, and kind of watched,” she told WRAL News. “Then I realized, ‘Oh my goodness, my husband is right. I have to give him props.'”

The National Weather Service [NWS] issued a tornado warning until 7:15 p.m. Friday for Granville and Person counties. Hudson said she wasn’t nervous at first. on Saturday, the NWS confirmed the tornado that touched down was an EF1 with peak wind speeds of 105 mph.

“I didn’t start getting nervous until we saw all this metal and debris coming up,” she said. “I was like, “Pull forward!’ Because If we hadn’t, I think it would have come right at us.”

More residents around Granville County captured visuals of the possible tornado whipping around, with some capturing debris hitting the ground. Hudson said she felt a rush of several emotions as it passed by behind her.

“It was amazing, scary and exciting,” she said. “Just everything at once.”

WRAL News has reached out to the NWS to confirm if a tornado touched down, while Hudson said seeing it in person will make her take tornado warnings more seriously.

The NWS confirmed three other tornadoes on Friday in central North Carolina:

  • One Friday afternoon in Nash County
  • The other on Friday morning in Sampson County
  • The last one Friday in Durham County.
