Charleston to Cape Town

NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown recently completed the 2011 Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) Northeast Extension project. The project, which included 14 scientists from four countries, focused on the dynamics of the equatorial Atlantic region where hurricanes are generated. The ship covered more than 7,000 nautical miles from Charleston, S.C. to Cape Town, South Africa, deploying five oceanographic moorings, four underwater hydrophone moorings and more than 100 weather balloons along the way.
