Alaska Fisheries Science Center Longline Survey
NOAA’s Alaska Fisheries Science Center – Every year over more than 35 million pounds of sablefish are caught in the waters off Alaska. Also known as black cod, or butterfish, sablefish are prized for their flavor, texture, and health benefits, making them one of the highest-valued finfish per pound in Alaska. The Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s longline survey is one of the oldest times series of groundfish abundance in Alaska and is conducted annually to help monitor and manage the sablefish fishery and preserve the commercial fishing legacy for which Alaska is known.
