Jackson County Public Health confirmed a case of pertussis at Blue Springs High School.Commonly known as whooping cough, symptoms include a runny nose, mild cough, and severe coughing fits.“Pertussis is a contagious respiratory illness that may initially seem like a common cold,” says Bridgette Shaffer, health director of Jackson County Public Health. “This disease can have very serious complications, especially for infants and those with chronic health conditions like asthma.”The health department and school district are working together to prevent further infections.Health officials advise early antibiotic treatment and vaccination as the best protection.
