A rabid skunk was found in the backyard of a home in this N.J. county
Camden County officials confirmed Thursday that another animal has tested positive for rabies.
The county was notified by the state Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday that a skunk found in a backyard had tested positive for the disease this week, officials said.
The skunk was found in a backyard in Gloucester Township and officials do not believe there was any exposures to humans or pets.
The skunk was retrieved by the township’s animal control officer. who arranged for it to be tested at the state laboratory, officials said.
This is the third animal found in Gloucester Township with a confirmed rabies infection. Two other rabid skunks were found in Gloucester Township earlier in the year.
Gloucester Township is one of the largest sections of Camden County with about 65,000 residents spanning roughly 23 square miles, according to U.S. census data.
Two other rabid skunks were confirmed in Collingswood and Camden in addition to a cat that contracted rabies and was taken to a Voorhees animal shelter.
County officials reminded residents to avoid interacting with wild animals and if they are scratched or bitten by a wild animal that they seek immediate medical attention.
